Love the smilies! For me:

1969 Get over the late 60s! Some of the best music ever was in the late 60s, but the charts were mostly rubbish. (Although, tbf, not as rubbish as the 90s!)
1976 Fabulous. Midst of the best period for chart music ever.
1988 After the early / mid 80s doldrums, a final fling of life and energy in the charts, although mixed with plenty of records hinting at the dross to come.

Finally, my usual observation that the best period for chart music was 1940 to 1989 (or arguably the early 90s). A fifty year golden chart period that is perfect for Radio 2 to focus on - leaving the last 25 years for the Radio 1 audience to focus on. And yet when POTP is expanded to three years, all three of them are from the second half of the golden period.

I wonder which hour will be dropped for Thursday's repeat?

There's a thought that the easiest option for them for editing purposes is to drop the middle hour. Certainly, not having hour 1 would mean they had to redo the intro to the show, unless they do that anyway to miss out mentioning the missing hour.

This was the first brand new chart of my lifetime playing in this first hour. Although my due date was today, 27th June 1969 but I ended up 10 days early. A fine music month to be born into.

Plays Crazy Elephant and jokes - Elephants can never be naturists.....because they always wear trunks!

You were luckier than the baby born in the Number 5 hit!

Reminds me of the old adage, you may be born in the gutter but at least your are looking up at the stars. That song saw Elvis return to form all over again after a small chart hiatus of modest success.

This chart was the one that had the Beatles at No1 for the very final time ever.

Sally Traffic you bitch! Nice riposte Tony. She deserved that for crossing a line. She's too full of herself.

I think you are right Al. I seem to recall reading as much on the TOTP 1976 thread when I was just a lurker.

Believe it or not but next week could end up being even hotter than the corresponding scorcher in 1976 that was heating up for a long stretch at this very point.

I think you are confusing Leif Garrett (from 1979) with Lee Garrett (here in 1976) somehow.

And one of the major Splatter Platters...

It's 1976, yet we've had two 60's re-issues of Dion and Shangi-La's. I'm not keen when playing an archive year and then doing this, even if they were in the charts. If we are playing '76 I'd rather hear bona fide 1976 singles. Weird how that Shangri-La's single was such a big hit 3 times in just over a decade.

There's a website for people that are curious about such things in real life such as bike crashes and what they can make you look like as splatter. Makes you ride or drive carefully having seen the reality and how rapidly a deadly accident can come out of nowhere even when it is not your fault.

The bulk of the 1976 Chart was the Beacon 303 playlist for that week in 76! Canada by Pilot was played loads on 303 too, a great song! When "The Music 'Was' The Sunshine"!

Speakers were dying on my telly - so I treated myself to a new Canton soundbase- Richer Sounds tech came in and fitted it yesterday - so having a proper bass response is MUCH nicer...

Completely disagree. They are part of the chart and should be played. The Wanderer in particular I associate with the summer of 1976 not the early 60s.

As for Leader of the Pack, at the start of this chart run it had the unique (?) distinction of being in the chart in two different positions in the same week as it was re-released on two different labels, until the charts company then combined the sales into one position in subsequent weeks.

The hot summer of 1976 lasted from the beginning of June to mid- September. Next weeks 'heatwave' is supposed to last three days at most. Not exactly record breaking.

Leader of the Pack is my least favourite song of the sixties. I hate it.

Not sure if Tony mentioned this as I have not heard my recording yet. Lee Garrett did backing vocals on some Stevie Wonder tracks. You Are the Sunshine of My Life being one of them.

He mentioned that he had co-written Signed Sealed Delivered.

For once I agree with you! 1988 very poor so far, the Wet Wet Wet cover of With A Little Help From My Friends was atrocious. Mica Paris was very good though, fantastic summer song. And now to upset Rich, after already playing Car Wash, Tony's playing Phil Coliins's 1981 dirge! (Luckily, 1989 was so much better than 1988, thanks partly, of course, to SAW.)
