Radio Caroline Flashback did the 1980 Top 20 10 days ago on the Caroline Flashback Countdown on Saturday, 9th July and these songs;

SIMON TEMPLAR/TWO PINTS OF LAGER AND A PACKET OF CRISPS PLEASE - SPLODGENESSABOUNDS
747 (STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT) - SAXON
FUNKYTOWN - LIPPS INC
TO BE OR NOT TO BE - B.A. ROBERTSON

Were all definitely played on air in their show.

Accidentally deleted my record settings so have only just got around to listening to Thursday's early morning repeat. It's the first show I've heard Gambo do and I was pleasantly surprised. He manages to inject a genuine air of enthusiasm for the job. I like the way he introduced comparisons with the American chart positions as previous presenters have largely ignored them. He is also able to synchronize the final chart positions with the theme tune in a way that Mark Goodier wasn't, I would have thought that would be a prime requisite for the job.

Radio Caroline Flashback doing 1975 on the Caroline Countdown this afternoon! Had to smile when in true rebellious Radio Caroline style, J'Taime by Judge Dread was played in full! They wouldn't dare do that on Pick Of The Pops on BBC Radio 2 lol!

This is a great POTP today with 1976 and 1985. Both feelgood charts full of summer sounding music.

Having been a pick of the pops listener for years with it s
many presenters the decision to have Paul Gambaccini has ended my listening. Whilst I admit he is a knowledgeable and respected broadcaster unfortunately I cannot stand his accent or his presenting style. Why with the number of radio presenters the BBC employ do we need an american anyway?

Why does it matter if Paul Gambaccini is American? Alan Freeman was Australian. Mark Goodier was actually born in what was then called Rhodesia. It bears no relevence on anything whatsoever.

At the end of the day Paul is doing a great job. Not everyone will like what he does or how he does it and not everyone likes all the previous show hosts. Paul has only been on the show 3 weeks. Give him a chance!

1976 - 7/10
This year for me is usually a mediocre one but with it being in July around the time of the heatwave I knew there would be some good songs within. I was hoping to hear David Dundas - Jeans on but unfortunately was out of the top 20. Not overly keen on the number one and the number two very soppy and emotional. Was a pleasure to hear Liverpool express and opening with Trex - I love to boogie. Have scored 1976 much lower in the past.

1985 - 6/10
Opening brilliantly with Tina Turner - We don't need another hero but it seemed to go downhill from there. Skipping she sells sanctuary seemed a sin with some of the other songs that got played instead. I've never heard of some of the stuff that was in there. The number one is not a personal favourite of mine (a world away from lost in music) and the number two an excellent choice although a non song, it doesn't get any AirPlay for it and was a great choice. Despite this it didn't repair the damage done throughout the rest of the chart with some of the choices played. Was typical of Paul to choose Born in the USA instead of Im on fire with the Bruce Springsteen double A side. Have scored 1985 much higher - especially in November last year now that was exceptional.

Pedantic alert!

Since Gambo took over the show a couple of weeks ago I have noticed a change in how he mentions the chart. Unlike previously when Tony did the show, where he used to say the chart of "week ending", which for 1976 today would have been 24th July, and for 1985 would have been 27th July, Paul Gambaccini actually says the date TODAY, so 23rd July for todays POTP.

The trouble is that on 23rd July 1985 the UK Singles chart was not the one broadcast today. On that very date the new No1 became the Eurythmics, topping the charts for their only ever week, and Madonna shot straight in at No4 with Into The Groove, which was to be her first No1 the next week.

The emphasis has clearly now been placed on the very date, rather than merely the old w/e, and I hate to say it when it's only his third show but we did not hear the chart as it was on this day in 1985. The reality was quite different infact.

I agree with you. However, being even more pedantic, from what you say, the 1985 chart would have been correct for the morning of 23rd July 1985!

If you thought 1976 and 1985 were good, wait until next week. Two really quality charts.

Ah Boz, but being even more pedantic, today's POTP began at 1pm (ahem, I mean 1.02pm) and on that Tuesday 23rd July 1985 the new No1 was being played at 1pm.

Check out the title of the #99 tune on the list from Len Spencer from 1896 which was No2 for three weeks.
