I recall about 18 months ago when Aneka Rice finished her Saturday show with a 60's track (may have been Freddie & the Dreamers) and that very same track opened up Sound of the 60's directly after the 8am news.

That I guess was down to poor research but I refuse to believe that Radio 2 can't repeat a song that was played 48 hours earlier.

Began listening to Smooth in late 2010 when Andy Peebles had a nice evening show. Stopped in 2013 when David Jensen left. The repetition was a joke. Tony Blackburn made references to it on POTP more than once.

However I think I know the answer to your question Wakey and it revolves around the early Thursday morning repeat of POTP. The one that played 1987 was repeated from 3am to 5am on 14th July, followed by Vanessa Feltz early show. Presumably this was the show you heard on 14th July and not the Monday but the Thursday with Vanessa when she would not play Pet Shop Boys. Obviously because it had been the last song played just before 5am as her own show was about to begin.

EDIT; I've just checked this out and my explanation is absolutely correct and the date I gave. You heard it on a Thursday morning after the repeated POTP. It's A Sin had been played on Radio 2 just 90 minutes earlier. So she decided to play the No3 single in the UK for the caller, which was Who's That Girl by Madonna. All cleared up! ”

That is a fantastic explanation but I have to stress that this happened on a Monday and that Vanessa played the American number one Whitney Houston - I wanna dance with somebody, not Madonna - who's that girl, (the same rule would apply to this too surely?) I don't listen to the repeat and remember pet shop boys being fresh in my mind as i usually like to guess the number one of the jolly good fellow while they ramble on to Vanessa before it is announced and played.

(That may well have happened on Thursday too but I missed it)

She didn't though Wakey. Here is the proof from the Monday 11th July show, two days after POTP played 1987;

What you describe happened on Thursday 14th July, in Vanessa's show immediately after the repeat 1987 POTP. Listen to it below from 1 hour 26 minutes into the show ;

The midweek repeat/revised edition of last Saturday's show included three new entries plus Roy Orbison at No.20.

39. Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations

38. I saw Her Again Last Night - Mamas and Papas

34. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

20. Lana - Roy Orbison

That's so bizarre, I don't remember her playing who's that girl, that's the main thing that's making me cynical, i remember her playing Whitney Houston which episode am I getting confused with? Had this also happened in the days before such as Tuesday and Wednesday ? (Will have a listen tomorrow)

Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody wasn't played at all that week on Vanessa's show, 11 - 15 July.

Today's Pick Of The Pops with Paul Gambaccini plays the hits from this week back in 1970 and 1981.

This August 81 charts one of my all time favourites

This Kate Bush track is her best in my opinion

Now we're talking. 1981 leaves 1970 in the shadows, especially this weeks comparable charts.

I had no idea that Lay All Your Love On Me by Abba was the No1 12" single of all time. Thought it might have been Blue Monday or something. I don't for a moment doubt Gambo has it spot on though. No chart errors he!

I adore Kate Bush and almost all she has done. But I have never liked Sat In Your Lap, I just cannot get into it or enjoy it at all. Infact I don't just not like it, I actively dislike it.

That ABBA comment surprised me too. I can't remember if he said it was in the UK or generally. I'm sure 'Blue Monday' is the biggest selling 12" in the UK.

And Elvis was on his 2nd week at No.1 not 3rd. School boy error there from Paul.

I'm loving this chart from 1981 though I had to turn down the radio when 'Hooked On Classics' came on as I have the window wide open and the neighbours might think I'm cracking up listening to a track like it!

The biggest selling 12" single of all time in the UK is indeed 'Blue Monday' with sales well over 700,000 up to the end of 1987 but it wasn't the highest charting 12" only release as that was 'Lay All Your Love On Me' by Abba, perhaps that was was Paul meant. 'Blue Monday' has now sold over 1 million copies but it took a 7" remix release in 1988 to push it higher than number 9 (Abba reached number 7) and eventually help the single over the million mark once sales from the 1990s had been added. It has now sold over 1.2m copies.

The controversial offshore pirate station Radio North Sea International was on air through most of 1970 as the only real daytime competition for Radio One with many songs on the chart Paul played today played on RNI and not neccesarily on Radio 1 like the Ten Years After song.

Later in 72/3 Radio North Sea International heavily played the Judge Dread singles which Radio One ignored. Judge Dread also made jingles for RNI plugging his songs!

I wish I'd remembered that today's POTP was doing 1970 because late last night I hand posted a 46th birthday card to a friend of mine whose birthday it is today. She likes her music and I could have let her know to listen out for her birth date chart. Although she should have been born under Woodstock by Matthews Southern Comfort believe it or not, as she was actually due around 6th November, not 6th August. Three months premature in 1970 she must have been lucky to make it. She could do with losing a few pounds now though!

Maybe the Abba stat is worldwide rather than just UK, as he mentioned how well it went down in the American clubs back then?

Like Scott Shannon mentioned on WCBS FM New York yesterday, My Sharona by The Knack was the biggest selling single of 1979 - worldwide!

I don't think the New Order single did so well in North America?

'Lay All Your Love On Me' did well in US clubs in a version on the Disconet label that never had a commercial release. It was a DJ only subscription service that specialised in remixing tracks.

The Disconet version has been uploaded to youtube - it's absolutely wonderful (though the sound in the video isn't too good), as is the original album version which as you may recall I mentioned in the TOTP 1981 thread Abba refused to allow to be released in the UK as a single but as the group could only veto 7" releases Epic were able to circumvent this by releasing the track as a 12" only release.

there's a few good comments on that youtube video!

Quote:
“WHAT A BUTT ON FRIDA! OH MY GOD.”

Quote:
“Frida putting her leg on the piano every five seconds makes me want to explode!!!”

and the best of the lot...

Quote:
“I always fancied them two beauties but could never quite make my mind up which one I wanted sex with the most - Benny or Bjorn”

That last "beauties" quote above really made me laugh Robbie. That's a good one indeed.

It wasn't Andy from the TOTP thread by any chance?

Not unless he posts at YouTube as "steve FromEngland"!

13th August
On this date POTP will feature the charts from that week in 1974 and 1999.

Just when you think Radio 2 can't dumb down anymore, they choose the worst year of the seventies and then a chart featuring Britney Spears.

Well, that is two hours I Will have time to do something better next week.

1974 was the first year I really got into following the charts so will enjoy it. And the chart in 1999 was two days after the (admittedly disappointing, due to clouds) total solar eclipse of the sun in the UK...

"david1956 not liking a song, artist or year" does not equal "Radio 2 is dumbing down". Excellent that they are finally doing a later year and also excellent that it features Britney!

I disagree the 1974 is a great fun chart! Just the Donny & Marie song I don't like. Bet the Glitter Band will be ignored even though I know of stations that would play them.

Amateur Hour by Sparks pure genius!

A bit of a typo in your first sentence Rich, you've got 1970 and 1981 transposed. I must admit there were a few good songs in the 1981 chart, but 1970 completely blows it away.

Given what Paul G has gone through over the last couple of years it would be criminal of him to class the Glitter Band as "guilty by association" and not play them.
