You see he did what I feared he would and skipped Fly Away by John Denver. Not a hit here so he should play such as that to give us a chance to hear it instead of ones that were big hits here too. Same with Paul Anka just now look. Anyone agree?

I remember this Donna Summer track not being played on the Top 20.

Oh yes, I was hoping Gambo would play Donna Summer! Famously banned by the BBC in 1976 due to Donna's moaning, it shows how times have changed! Then again, compared to some records these days it does sound positively tame...

Some interesting songs in the current chart, which, although dated 5/1/17 includes Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so has a lot of festive tracks in it. Perhaps most incredible of all, the Christmas classic from Darlene Love, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" from the early 1960s makes its chart DEBUT, at Number 74. "Sleigh Ride" by the Ronettes is also notable at Number 68. Brenda Lee is in the Top 40 and there's an interesting quirk at Numbers 93 & 94, "Let It Snow Let it Snow Let It Snow" in both positions, by Frank Sinatra at 93 and Dean Martin at 94.

I got wrong off my mum for listening to the Donna Summer record back in February 1976 when Radio Luxembourg used to play it. She said I was too young to be listening to it! Even at 12 I knew what she was singing about...

I hope you heard Gambo playing Dana 45 minutes ago - as soon as it came on I did wonder if you were listening!

Can anyone explain why Glad All Over by the Dave Clark Five has re-entered the singles chart at Number 31 at the moment? :-/

Yeah it was a campaign by a Scottish football club to get it to Xmas No.1. Failed though!

I hope he plays the previous week's Number one from the Staple Singers mainly because I don't remember it at all!

The question for today is, why on Earth did Gambo play it and then skip The Drifters hit. Could only have been for a bet.
Why shouldn't it have been played? It went up 7 places in the chart. Should have played The Drifters also but maybe not Bowie as going down.
Of course The Goodies should have been played, they were rather......er, good! They are an integral part of the mid 1970's and deserve hearing. This is after all what POTP is meant to be about, playing such hits and not re-treading through all the obvious candidates. David you should know that. I'm not sure taste comes into it.

Really enjoying this UK v USA chart but to be honest the disappointment so far is how many already well known UK hits are in it and getting played. It barely feels Stateside so far, although the top end should change that I think.

It was down to another football fans campaign. This one was a Rangers campaign due to their fans adopting the song to sing about Joe Garner, one of their players. Although it was only at number 31 in the UK charts, it was the best selling track in Scotland last week.

Their fans aren't singing much now as Celtic have just beaten them this afternoon - yes!

I'm sure there'll be a campaign next Christmas to get Last Christmas to No.1 but a lot of fans apparently would prefer it to never reach No.1 so that it retains it's title as biggest selling No.2 single to never reach No.1.

Me neither. I remember the No.1, a minor hit here that I actually bought.

...But he didn't write this one, as Ray Moore used to say.

Hope Gambo plugs his show on Monday night. Listeners need to know where to find it.

Who thought The Bay City Rollers could influence The Ramones? When Joey heard 'Saturday Night' he said he wanted his group to sound like the Rollers. Forget the Sex Pistols, the Rollers were one of the main influences on one of the most seminal punk groups of the 70s!

I thought the UK-US chart combo worked really well. The US chart was a mix of familiar songs and ones that were only US hits. It was interesting to hear some UK hits being US hits in a different timeframe.

Amazing that BCR's "Saturday Night" was a US Number 1 and it wasn't even released as a single in the UK! Also Barry Manilow having a hit with his song "I Write the Songs" five months after David Cassidy's cover was a UK hit! Plus I'd never heard that particular mix of "Love to Love You Baby" before.

It added a freshness to the show and I hope they repeat the idea.

The "Official Charts Company" currently has a listing on its website of all the UK songs which stalled at Number 11 (and therefore just failed to become Top 10 hits) which is quite interesting.

I do like Soul / Disco music but in smaller doses than on this show!

Half looking forward to The Golden Hour next week, but if it's produced by Swern then expect it to be the same old same old.

1975 or 1977?

Either way, this week Pick Of The Pops will be "comparing" the hits from both the British and American charts of today back in one of those years.

Pick Of The Pops needs a bit of a freshen up and this sounds like a good start.
I agree. I thought it worked really well. I hope it becomes a regular part of the show.

'Saturday Night' was released as a single in the UK in the summer of 1973 with lead vocals by Nobby Clark but it failed to chart.

The single that topped the American chart had vocals re-recorded by his replacement Les McKeown but it wasn't re-released in the UK in that form.

Also Barry Manilow having a hit with his song "I Write the Songs" five months after David Cassidy's cover was a UK hit!
'I Write The Songs' was written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys and originally recorded by The Captain and Tennille as an album track in 1975. David Cassidy and Barry Manilow both covered the song later that same year.

His opening quip makes the news - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38482007

First track back was Gloria Gaynor and at the end of it he emphasised part of the title, I Will Survive.

Happy New Year fellow pop pickers. (why no white wine? )
