Never tire of Heartbreaker. Tony crashing the end of a lot of songs today.

Have to agree but don't agree with Tony playing a song that drops 8 places to No.16 (Fat Larry's Band) yet skips over the song at No.4 by Kids From Fame.

At the very least I'd expect, always expect the full Top 5

I thought this too. Great song that Zoom is, it gets heard so frequently (especially if you listen to Smooth Radio!) and as Tony often mentions it is great that POTP can play songs rarely heard on the radio and today was a good example of missing that opportunity I thought. I remember absolutely adoring Starmaker at the time and playing it frequently from my taped off the radio acquisition. It was a song very much of it's time of course, hence a great reason to play it I'd have thought.

Glitter Band do seem to be tarnished by association don't they? The track was overlooked and a curt brief mention and onwards for their hit Let's Get Together Again which rose up the played top ten on todays edition.

Anybody having problems trying POTP to play on Iplayer? Just keeps saying "Content doesn't seem to be working. Try Again Later"

Gonna check this out now. I hope there isn't a problem as I'm dying to hear 1982. He'd better have played Barry Manilow and binned the Beatles. In my view, if songs have to be missed out then re-issues should be high on the list. Love Me Do's a good song, but I want to keep in the 1982 zone. Gutted that Starnaker wasn't played. Although I was made on Fame at this time, I didn't know until later that the actor who played the teacher they're singing to in the video was in real life terminally ill - that's why the members of the cast who don't sing are in it in miming.

I'm still not sure why 1982 was featured again just a month aftert it was last on. Not complaining as its my kind of era just seems strange that so many songs were played last time and this time.

The only time when it works is when I'm listening live. But I have to work Saturdays so can't listen to POTP live and in my job we can't listen to the radio. I've tried to clear everything on Chrome but that hasn't work.

I was able to play it okay, though I use an out of date MSN brower for iplayer and not chrome.

Just backtracking slightly to the subject of non-original versions played. I noticed this week that the number 1 track, Everything I Own by Ken Boothe sounded slightly different than how I used to remember it. It had like an annoying bells/chimes sound worked into the intro, and at certain places through the song. So I checked my CD collection, and found that track on 9 different various compilation CDs. And they all were the same as this. So, hunted out the original vinyl on You Tube, and there it is, in it's original state as I remember it. So, not really POTP fault if the original version no longer exists on CD! Or, do any of you purists out there know of the original version on CD? Maybe on a Ken Boothe collection??

Slightly confused!! At 34.30 on 1974 hour Tony says he was doing the Radio One Breakfast show at the time. I thought he finished that mid 1973 and handed it to Noel Edmonds. Presumably he should be referring to the mid morning slot??

I was put off by the bells too. Eventually I found the original single version without the bells included on the album 'The Story of Trojan Records'. It is on iTunes etc.

As an aside, the writer of this song was thinking about his recently deceased father, which gives the lyrics a totally different slant.

You were far from alone as I also noticed something slightly different from expectations when the Ken Boothe track began playing, but after a few seconds it seemed to sound right again so I just thought it was my imagination. Obviously not.

I was pleased that from 1974 he played Sparks' Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth and Roxy Music's All I Want is You. These are among both bands' best singles but rarely played. Similarly George McCrae's I Can't Leave You Alone.

Noel took over June 73, although Tony certainly weren't happy about it, think he'd still like to be doing it now and he'd make a better job of it that Grimshaw that's for sure.

Tony did mid mornings in 74 thru to 77 then he moved to afternoons before leaving weekdays in August 79 for his weekend slots and Top 40.

If Annie Nightingale can still be on Radio 1 when she is 73, playing dance music, then surely Tony Blackburn can still be doing the breakfast show. He'd probably raise the listenership even now! But then they only want people under about 14 listening nowadays don't they. I thought Tony was a great listen on Radio 1 when I was just 11 to 15 years old (1980-1984), so why wouldn't that age now I wonder. He's the same after all, infact better! Like the finest vintage wine.

Blimey ... I wasn't expecting to introduce a discussion about whether he should be doing the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in 2013 (which did make me and I'm sure Tony laugh out loud!!)

Beautiful lyrics by Sparks on a topic 20 years ahead of its time. Probably the song of theirs that has been most covered by other artists.

Sparks were well ahead of their time in 1974 from the first big hit record earlier in the year. The buzz around this group in 1974 must have been amazing, as they still sound amazing all these years later. I've just checked out their album success in the charts and was utterly staggered to see that they have not even had an album into the Top 50 since 1975, and have spent the grand total of just 3 weeks in the album chart since then, despite a couple out over the past 5 to 7 years. They need a Christmas Greatest Hits compilation to bring them to a whole new audience and to grace the album chart with their brilliance.

I did read a long time ago that the BBC got rid of a lot of records from their library, you would have thought that they could have transferred a lot of records on to their play out system so you would not hear re-recordings sometimes, .

I have a big record collection 50s 60,s up to the late 90s ( ex-mobile dj) I have transferred about 2000 of my records onto my computer, would have thought the Beeb might have done something similar,

PS I listened to Tony on Radio 1 till he left the station happy memories !

They will never be mainstream enough for the charts. Their reward is in leaving a body of work that will stand the test of generations. .
