I thought Tony was a great listen on Radio 1 when I was just 11 to 15 years old (1980-1984), so why wouldn't that age now I wonder. He's the same after all, infact better! Like the finest vintage wine.

(Hope you're still reading Tony )”

Annie Nightingale has always an avid music fan and always moved with the times. Tony Blackburn did reinvent himself a bit in the Radio London years but he was pretty out of touch even back then outside the Soul Genre. His constant moans about bands like The Jam and not knowing how to pronounce Duran Duran certainly showed he was out of touch.

It's not ideal - I really wish he wouldn't, But there are retro shows out there that are much worse!

Two ideas for those who value enjoying records fully: Firstly try the Non-Stop Top 40 from Replay Radio on Thursday at 5pm. Also on at 7pm Saturday and 5pm Sunday. Secondly try Paul Burnett's show on the Wireless at 4pm Sundays.

Many thanks for those. I'm missing the Double Top 20 on Sunday nights.

Right - we're off. Hour 1 - http://www.officialcharts.com/archiv.../1/1965-11-20/ - 20 Nov 1965

I'm looking forward a lot more to the chart for w/e 17th November 1979 in the next hour. The 60's don't enthuse me as much as I think they should. Must be an age thing. Out of 1,632 hit singles on the iPod, only just over 100 come from this decade.

To those kids who claim that 1D are better than the Beatles... the day I hear of someone like Tom Jones covering something like What Makes You Beautiful, and easy-listening arrangements beign recorded and released.....

Never quite understood the appeal of Get Of My Cloud, and its No1 status. Dreadful racket.

Hour 2 - http://www.officialcharts.com/archiv.../1/1979-11-17/

Kicking off with one Gibson Bros track that IIRC both Last Days of Disco and 54 got the rights for.

I love this Herb Alpert single, Rise! Have the long version digitally downloaded.

And back to how Kool etc unified the West Holt audience as opposed to Bey alienating half of them at the Pyramid..

Knocked It Off by BA Robertson took me right back to the school Christmas disco in 1979 aged 10 when we were making very rude gestures to this song as we danced and us boys pretended to girls what we had infact knocked off of a vital part of our anatomy, as we guitar strummed between our legs!

Having a listen now to 1972, and very good it is too, thanks.

1974 again on POTP on December 7th, a 4 week gap for 1974!

Was really looking forward to the 1979 chart, but can only give it 6 out of 10 because the 3 songs I really wanted to hear were skipped:
XTC - Making Plans For Nigel - Class!
Ramblers - The Sparrow - I used to love singing along to this.
Suzi Q - She's In Love With You - My fave song of hers.
I don't know off hand if it was the exact same week, but Dale did a chart from this time where he played all of those, so that will always take priority on my ipod.

There were some good songs played though - Enough Is Enough, Every Day Hurts, Gimme Gimme Gimme. I'm not that familiar with the Herb Alpert song, so wish that had been skipped. Also, how can a guy who wrote Carrie and The Living Years (and I Wanna Be A Winner for Brown Sauce!) write such a dreadful song as Knocked It Off?

Can't say I'm thrilled about 1974 yet again. Aren't we going to get 1980 or 1983 before the end of the year?

We often agree Clare, but not this time. I love the Herb Alpert track Rise, and am pleased he played it. It's excellent and was a much bigger hit in the US than here, where it spent 2 weeks at No1 in late October 1979 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I had a look back to see if I have got that edition of POTP that you mention. I haven't, but did discover I have another one from chart w/e 3rd November 1979, presented by Alan Freeman in 1998. No XTC, Ramblers or Suzi Q on it though, but it does begin with Rise.

I'll be giving Rise another listen at some point. I think I was put out a bit that the 1979 hour, which I was really looking forward to, didn't kick off with a song I know and could sing along to.

The 1979 chart that Dale did was in 2008.

I'm so glad we're getting 1983, though a couple of weeks later would have been even better.

Just backtracking a bit here to actually a few weeks before these POTP threads started, to the 27th April when Tony featured 1968. Just had another listen, and paid particular attention to when Tony played Delilah by Tom Jones in the top ten. Now, the version played was the usual one that is now found on CD, and checking through my different CDs with this track on, it has become clear that an alternative version has been used for CD, and not the original vinyl 45 version. My question to all of you readers, and anyone who particularly remembers that track being played in the 60s, is, do they know of any CD that features the vinyl version. The original version can be heard on You Tube, titled Tom Jones Delilah - Original 45 wmv, and posted by h2izcool. There are subtle differences, but most noticeable on CD at around 1:35 where Tom sings "I felt the knife in my hand, and she laughed no more", with the word "more" being stretched out, as opposed to the vinyl which was just one syllable. I was lucky enough the other week for a member to put me right on a Ken Boothe query, and am hoping to have some luck with this one!
The POTP team would probably have had no choice than to play this alternative version, as every CD so far that I have tried, includes it!

I have some original recordings of Tony Blackburns Radio 1 breakfast show from 1973 including his last show before Noel Edmunds got the slot, Wizards "See My Baby Jive" and Dawns "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" where new releases. He also sends his first wife best wishes on their first wedding anniversary.

It sounds odd how people who wrote in back then and got a request had their full addresses read out.

As for Tony Blackburn I always liked him and think he is a good broadcaster.

Just wanted a quick moan that 1982 is apparently being featured again on the 14 December. So that'll be the third time in 3 months. It'll be a good chart, but there are other 80s years just as good. 80, 81 and 88 would be good.

Today's Pick Of The Pops with Tony Blackburn is playing the charts from the week of President Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and also the hits from the week of Mrs Thatcher's resignation as Prime Minister in 1990!

Well I wasn't born when JFK was shot, but I certainly remember where I was when I heard Maggie had resigned, though the person who told me had the exact opposite feelings on the matter to me!

Another retro chart I listen to did the 1963 chart this week and it was really good - though at one point I thought I was listening to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.

I agree, I'm not sure why they have gone for 1982 again.

Last year they played the week ending 13 December 1980. This was the chart announced by Paul Burnett on the day of John Lennon's death.
