I think I mentioned it over on the TOTP 1978 thread a few weeks ago that there was a highly unusual situation on one of the weeks charts, w/e 16th December 1978, where Elton had got 2 brand new records out, and both of those songs climbed the very same chart in the same week. Very rare, especially then, maybe even unique, unless someone knows better?

Who has ever been embarrassed buying music in a record shop and handing it to the assistant?
Bucks Fizz are coming up soon on here, but much later, in 1997, I bought their greatest hits CD for about £6 and felt a bit sheepish doing so as a twentysomething male, and am sure I got a look of disdain when I handed it over the counter at Our Price. But they are damned good. I feel no shame. |

They were indeed. One of those bands for whom their Eurovision image blinded some people's ears to just how good some of their later singles were.

Actually, yes. Lennon after his death in 1980, possibly Elvis in 1977 after his, and The Jam, maybe twice. I think Donna Summer had two in one chart in the 1970s. Cassidy possibly and also, later, someone in the SAW fold? |

Such a bizarre key change during Wedding Bells. Never to this day know if it was deliberate or accidental.
Obviously if the album version is the same as the single it was deliberate (assuming it was originally an album track ).Quote:

Such a contrast between the two singles. Part Time Love was a real fun performance and Elton looked quite good, whereas Song For Guy is extremely melancholy and the look wasn't too good. Quote:

Spot on. I don't know if they both climbed in one week though. I think there are quite a few other examples. Possibly Slade - "My Oh My" and "Merry Xmas Everybody" in, what, 1983? If I can think of any others, I'll shout.
Actually, yes. Lennon after his death in 1980, possibly Elvis in 1977 after his, and The Jam, maybe twice etc. The most recent one was Lily Allen when she had 2 tracks in the Top 10 over Christmas. Her cover of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' and 'Hard Out Here'. Much easier to do these days with downloads. John Lennon had 3 tracks in the Top 5 back in January 1981 but apart from (Just Like) Starting Over not new material. Elvis had a whack of re-entries in September 1977 but most just missed the Top 40. Slade's a great example. 'Merry Xmas Everybody' spent 3 weeks at No.20 in '83 the same weeks 'My Oh My' was stuck at No.2 for 3 weeks behind The Flying Pickets (Don't even get me going on that!! ) But again not 2 new tracks.Remember when the rules stated that you couldn't get on the 'Pops 2 weeks in a row unless you were No.1? I'm sure Slade wangled it in 1983 when they did 'My Oh My' one week then 'Merry Xmas Everybody' the next! Both in the chart, different songs ![]() The Jam got to perform 'Town Called Malice' and the 'B' side 'Precious' in 1982 in the same show as did Oasis in 1996 with 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Cum on Feel the Noize'. One Direction had 3 new tracks in the Top 40 towards the end of last year as did Eminem. |

Oh yes. Very good - thanks for that clarification. Someone mentioned Adam and the Ants and I think they had two but one was resurrected. "Young Parisians"? Also, possibly T Rex but that would have been with "Deborah" which was older. I think one of the Donna Summer ones was "I Remember You" and it could have been with "I Feel Love"? You can tell I'm half-recalling and haven't researched here. I still think Lisa Stansfield or Rick Astley but I could be wrong. The Jam may have had two in 1977 as well as around 1982 plus much later with re-releases? The 1990s?
I realise that this bit of a ramble goes wider than the original point for which my apologies! |

Not caught up with POTP yet, but looking forward to 1982. Put me down as well on the Bucks Fizz Greatest Hits CD owner list! They had some great songs. I think my fave is a toss up between My Camera Never Lies and Talking In Your Sleep. I can't remember if they went down the charts, but there was a cock up when they did Talking In Your Sleep on the live TOTP and they were invited on the follow week's show anyway.
Love Elton John's Blue Eyes and I love both the TOTP shows it appears on though the live performance, which I think Highlander is referring to is obviously the best. |

Bucks Fizz had some great tracks that didn't do so well chart-wise..'London Town', 'Rules Of The Game', Heart Of Stone'..My faves are 'If You Can't Stand the Heat' and 'When We Were Young'. A million miles away from 'Making Your Mind Up'.

![]() However a few of the examples above are invalid, as in the case of Elton I was asking for any possible further examples of BRAND NEW released singles BOTH climbing the chart in the SAME week. The Slade and John Lennon examples don't count as the songs Merry Christmas & Imagine were both old previously released hits beforehand anyway. The example of Focus, as previously mentioned, is utterly remarkable. Two brand new singles, Hocus Pocus & Sylvia. They both simultaneously rose up the exact same chart together for 5 consecutive weeks early in 1973. 27 Jan 73 - Hocus Pocus - 40 to 39 / Sylvia in at 34. 3 Feb 73 - Hocus Pocus - 39 to 33 / Sylvia 34 to 21. 10 Feb 73 - Hocus Pocus - 33 to 30 / Sylvia 21 to 9. 17 Feb 73 - Hocus Pocus - 30 to 22 / Sylvia 9 to 5. 24 Feb 73 - Hocus Pocus - 22 to 20 / Sylvia 5 to 4. Nothing can surely come close to Focus for such a remarkable chart stat. I bet even Tony Blackburn has never known this fabulous fact here. Maybe if he plays 1973 and Focus on POTP during February he can drop this one into the show himself. POTP on 22nd February would be perfect to play both Focus tracks at the end of their 5 week simultaneous climb. |
