To hear exquisite production values, as well as a decent song underneath, I really must insist that people download or get hold of Dollar's Give Me Back My Heart and then listen to that song on good quality headphones. Truly awesome.

Which reminds me, I have a missing Dollar single that is currently at No14 in the current TOTP 1979 showings. I must get hold of Shooting Star, their first hit.

Anyone tempted to diss either Dollar or Bucks Fizz should remember Trevor Horn produced the former and Pete Sinfield wrote for the latter

Dollar's 'Videotheque' was another wee cracker.

Still, it is a chance to hear more about music from other genres and to take more notice of album trends. That's what I've found. Here's my Top 10 from 12 January 1982 before I went in an indie and then later a world music direction:

01 Madness - It Must Be Love
02 Rod Stewart - Young Turks
03 Dollar - Mirror Mirror
04 Christopher Cross - Arthur's Theme
05 Abba - One Of Us
06 Jon and Vangelis - I'll Find My Way Home
07 Bucks Fizz - Land Of Make Believe
08 Human League - Don't You Want Me
09 The Police - Spirits In The Material World
10 Godley and Creme - Wedding Bells”

When songs WERE songs!! (Sounding like my dad) I'm nipping in the TARDIS for a trip to 1982. OK, I'll stick to Youtube. Someone just told me the TARDIS isn't real!

I feel rude for not saying before now welcome to the thread LT and thanks for the nice comments. I hope, if you can find them, you post more of your charts in relation to what is featured on POTP.

There is a massive irony for me, in that technology has clearly come a long way over the past few years, yet the production and sound values on the older hit records are far superior to most current ones, as shown by this Dollar hit from 1982 as a good example. For all the so called advances, a 30 year old hit record sounds vastly superior to the present time. Production quality just doesn't appear as important nowadays on so much music. It's like dish it up and serve it out, beans and mash style plopped on the plate, easy to do. Whereas I prefer my songs to actually sound like a decent bit of effort, like roast dinner with all the delightful trimmings. Some analogy I'm making here!

Those are very good points. Trevor Horn was seen as breaking new ground.

Thanks Clare - I will do that but will refer to mine occasionally as I don't want to confuse us all.

Whereas other producers later in the decade (not hard to guess who) promptly decided to fill that break in the ground back in again.

Interesting this....

Last week when he played 1958 he played Reet Petite from when it originally charted, and this week playing 1987 he is about to play Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson at No1, where it had been since Christmas.

Same record getting played on two consecutive weeks here. Seems highly unusual that.

Not had the chance to listen live today, but I'm looking forward to listening to both charts today, though especially 1987. Could do without Reet Petit, though!

Jackie Wilson infact passed away this coming week of 30 years ago at not even 50, having spent what seems like much of the previous decade incapacitated at such a very young age.
