So why was Moyles replaced in the 1st place? To get a younger audience! So they are hardly going to introduce a retro show presented by him are they?

Mr Moyles would the perfect presenter with a nostalgia programme a more "mature" presenter is the ideal host. He has worked albeit on various stations presenting that music so who would you choose he articulate Ms Cox??

For starters Annie Nightingale is only still on Radio 1 because she presents a specialist show that appeals to their audience. She's not there playing old music! Radio 2's demographic is very wide so both Tony Blackburn and Dermot O'Leary who follows him are in Radio 2's demographic. Surely if Tony wasn't it would mean they should be concentrating on more recent charts? Also how can a 20 year old be nostalgic for the 90's when they would have been too young to remember most of it?
![]() Annie Nightingale was born the same year as Cliff Richard, in 1940. Infact she's six months older than him. She's okay on Radio 1 because she presents a specialist show, with new music, as you say. Fine. In that case, and by that definition, if Cliff Richard was to suddenly put out a great new relevant track, bang up to date and credible, then there should be no issue with him appearing on the playlist at Radio 1 then? Yeah right! Remember when he did a track under the title Black Knight that was liked and played on Radio 1, until discovered who it was. For me, I'm not really interested in Pick Of The Pops playing charts after about 1999. However there were a couple of decent years that would be worth considering from 2007 / 2008 that did improve greatly at the time, and had some good chart music, lengthy chart toppers and many climbers, so I would not rule it out entirely, but as has been stated you have to be more selective with recent years because there are certain genres that Radio 2 listeners simply do not wish to hear. Personally for me, I've been pretty disgusted by the fact that the latest Olly Murs nothingness has been put on Radio 2's playlist and played too frequently. It belongs on Radio 1, not Radio 2 and each time I've heard it, the station has been switched off immediately. This is a thread about Pick Of The Pops and Tony Blackburn let's not forget here, before that gets forgotten!

Well we will have to agree to disagree. Is it Radio 2's job to cover the 90's and 00's? Well yes at least with the 90's considering the target audience is over 35's. Infact you could argue more for the 90's than the 50's not that I am saying the 50's should be abandoned. Also the 90's have been done quite a few times in the past and only seems to have been abandoned since the beginning of this year.

In the same way that I can be nostalgic for the 1970's even though I'm too young to remember it.

I think Tony is a great presenter but in my opinion I think he is much better when he presents shows where he shows his strengths. He is a great listen when he presents a Soul show like he does on BBC London but his knowledge of Post 70's Pop music seems to be a bit limited. |

But is that nostalgia as such? I can just about remember as far back as the late 70's when I was 5 or 6 but I enjoy lots of music from the 50's and 60's even though I wasn't born then but then people like me are probably in the minority. Yes I do agree that popular music has declined from the 90's onwards but there were and still is good moments. And with a restriction on years it means we keep on hearing the same years. I also enjoy shows like Paul Gambaccini's for the fact that you can hear a wide variety of American hits across the decades. Something that Pick of the Pops should and used to do.

Tony is till one of radio's finest, I have listened to him since 1967 (just bit too young to really remember the pirate era) I agree with you that his strengths lie in certain areas which is why I strongly feel that he should be Ken Bruce's stand in as he would be terrific back in mid mornings. also he should be doing a soul/motown show on R2. however he is still the best we have at this time presenting POTP. who will take over when he hangs-up the cans. |

Here's a nice crispy clear recording of the jingle on you tube. Come on Tony (if you're reading this!) Why not use it on Pick of the Pops? Remember, there's no mention of the radio station in it. You once said it was blessed by the Arch Bishop of Scunthorpe and was guaranteed to bring out the sunshine

Today's Pick Of The Pops is playing this week from 1966 and 1976....in vinyl.
![]() What's the betting that at least one track will jump, or get stuck during the show later today? For me, one of the forgotten classics that is in the 1976 Top 20 is James & Bobby Purify's I'm Your Puppet, the re-recorded and for me the superior version. It ought to get a play. It's a right mixed bag in the 1976 chart, with a couple of horrors in the top three if he plays w/e 12th June, which were the top two if he plays w/e 5th June 1976. But that's the beauty of Pick Of The Pops. |

Pick Of The Pops from 47 and 37 years ago on vinyl is about to begin. A "cracking" show ahead I'm sure!
![]() Listen through headphones if possble, the crackles evident immediately on the first track at the start of it. Yes Tony, I heard the crackles, as you asked!

Must admit that I'm not liking many of these 1966 tracks so far, and I utterly hate that Shotgun Wedding track, which even had the audacity to become a hit again in 1972!
Tony says he has not done a vinyl show like this "in over 30 years as a matter of fact". Really? So what was he spinning on Radio 1 in his latter days of 1983/84 then? It wasn't CD's.

1976 has actually sounded very good on its original vinyl singles. |

Pick Of The Pops
Tony introduced number 20 in 1976 as This Is It by Melba Moore, when actually number 20 was Save Your Kisses For Me by Brotherhood Of Man! A mistake or intentional I wonder?

Did anyody hear this comment by Tony? It went along the lines of 'to all those emailing in it's not my final show it's a vinyl show. Vinyl is another word for record'

![]() ![]() I also loved his comment right at the end of the show after playing the 1976 number one from this week that year, when he said "What a load of old......JJ Barrie's!" A great line.
