Sparks really did deserve a massive No1 with This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us. Should be grateful that it even managed to reach No2 in 1974 as it was such a leftfield sounding track, that apparently even Elton John thought was excellent but could not possibly become a big hit. It would almost sound more at home in the next chart 9 years later in 1983 to me.
Followed by the worst of the 70's, Bay Shitty Rollers. What a contrast.”
I have to say this. I hope I don't offend anyone as we all have our favourite era. I was eighteen in 1974 and that year for me seemed like the worst ever year for pop music ever. Not just music but everything was bad about 1974. The miners were on strike, there was a three day week at the beginning of the year and two general elections. It seemed like the country was on auto pilot. To make matters a million times worse the biggest selling singles group were The Wombles. You couldn't imagine how bad it was if you weren't there.
Listening to todays show Tony made it sound like it was a brilliant time. It wasn't. The mid seventies were crap.
On the 1974 Eurovision front, Tony played Mouth and MacNeil and of course he played Abba. It is interesting to note that although Abba are hailed as the best thing ever to come out of Eurovision the UK jury gave them nil points. Our top marks went to the song that came second in the contest. From Italy a fantastic ballad that Tony neglected to play. You can hear it here though.
