Had to say goodbye to my beloved Mog tonight.

It was all so sudden that I can't process it properly. He had been a bit lethargic today but nothing out of the ordinary eating and drinking as usual and still happy to be stroked and cuddled. About 10.30 I was about to go up to bed when I noticed he was laid in a funny position by the table.

I went to give him a stroke and he let out a little, very tired sounding, yowl and he tried to stand - he was very wobbly on his back legs so I phoned the emergency vet and took him straight up.

I was expecting an overnight stay and tests but she examined him and said she was almost certain it was a thrombosis and a clot had travelled down his spine. Nothing to be done.

I was with him at the end, stroking his face and talking to him. The vet said that as we'd got him in so quickly we had spared him too much pain which is the only thing I can take comfort in.

I just can't believe how quickly it all happened. I went to bed as soon as I got home but woke up about an hour ago and can't stop crying. I can see him in all his usual places, fast asleep at the top of the stairs or sprawled in front of the kitchen window.

Goodbye my lovely moggy Mog, I will miss you so much x

I'm really sorry to hear that. It must be a shock.

May your cat rest in peace.

That's very sad. R.I.P Mog.

My Winnie died in 2011 and I thought that I'd never come to terms with it, but I have. I miss her and I still cry sometimes but I'm okay. In time, you will be too. Cry as much as you need to.

Take care

It's what we all hope for when the time comes for any of our animals. It is more comfort over time.

Sincere condolences to you.

We lost our cat last October and it does take a little while for it to fully register (esp the little things like keeping the skin from a roast chicken)

Just try and remember that you were able to provide a good life full of love and attention.

I am so sorry to read your post, my heart goes out to you but you must take comfort from what the vet told you. Your concern for your beloved cat meant you acted quickly and prevented suffering. That is the best way to repay the loyalty Mog showed you and allow dignity at the end. Dignity is very important to cats.
You would never have forgiven yourself if Mog had been in pain, you did the right thing.

Don't be afraid to cry, take care
Big hugs from me

So sorry for your loss.

Almost exactly the same thing happened to me on 6th Feb this year, except by the time we got to our boy, he was already dead.

The shock for me was overwhelming and I found it took 3 days to move from inconsolable to a semblance of normality. Everyone is different, so do take your time to grieve over your precious moggie and don't allow anyone to make you feel bad about it.

I found a few things helped me. We made a lovely grave for him with a headstone, I hunted down all the pictures I ever had of him and made a book and I bought an ornament which looks just like him (I even say good night to it - everyone thinks I am a proper saddo but I don't care lol).

I'm sure you gave him a happy life and that have me some comfort too. Just thinking about all the cats who don't have homes and realising how lucky he was to have nine full years of mousing and being pampered.

I know how you feel anyway, is what I am trying to say.

Sorry for your loss, it must have been a horrible shock, but at least Mog went quickly and didn't suffer.

Thanks everybody for the caring replies.

I've really missed Mog today - now that the initial shock has worn off I'm noticing that he's not here. It sounds daft but just walking past 'his spot' at the top of the stairs makes me want to cry.
The house feels empty without him, I have other cats but Mog was a real character. He was a huge cat and walked with a real swagger, one of my cousins once joked that he walked like a 'gangster' and after that he nicknamed Snoop Moggy Mog

I know it will get better with time. Tomorrow I'm going to put his name on a little cherry blossom that we've got growing in the garden, I think it will be a nice little memorial for him.

So sorry for your loss..We lost our lovely Minou just over a year ago, she just died right in front of us, We buried her in her sunny spot in the garden and sowed Forget-Me-Nots over the spot, we have had a fantastic show of flowers this year that have given us so much pleasure.

Sorry sorry to read that. The loss of a cat take ages to get over, and I know exactly what you mean about seeing him in "his spot". I was like that for days .... well weeks..... when my cat got hit by a car, and wasn't sleeping under the hedge when I parked the car after work each day.

You can never replace one cat with another, but there will be another cat out there needing a good home like the one you gave Mog x

So sorry to hear such sad news. At least he didnt suffer. I lost my dog very suddenly, in similar circumstances, last September and I still miss her being in her little "spots" in the house. Time is a good healer, the pain gets easier, but you never forget them.

That made me smile!

So sorry to hear about Mog. How old was he?

The cherry blossom is a great idea. You don't get over losing cats in my experience but you get more cats and still think about the ones gone before all the time. We do anyway!

He was only 9. We have other cats as well, he's the first one that we've lost, and one of the biggest characters.

Sending you a hug too. It is the hardest thing in the world when we lose our wee furry friends so suddenly and unexpectedly. Take care of yourself. x
