Subtitles

WE have a Toshiba 32BV702B and I cannot get subtitles for my wife who is very hard of hearing.

I have done a 'NEW' setup and the subtitles appeared OK but when I went to use them again they don't appear.

I have done what the manual says but nothing.

Can anyone help please

At a bit of a loss here as the instructions in the manual seem straightforward

Displaying Subtitles
In digital broadcasts, this feature will show subtitles
on the screen in the selected language provided they
are being broadcast.
• Press SUBTTLbutton to activate available subtitles.
Press SUBTTLbutton again to turn off subtitles.

It would be helpful if you told us how you watch TV. Is it direct off the TV's own Freeview tuner, or are you watching via Sky, cable (Virgin) or some other method.

Not every TV channel carries subtitles. Also, of those channels that regularly do (mainly BBC and the main ITV channels) it isn't guaranteed that the individual programmes will be subtitled.

It may also be that you are watching via Sky. In which case you need to use the Sky box itself to set up and display subtitles.

Presuming that you are watching via Freeview, your best bet is to put on BBC1 via the Freeview tuner, then follow the instructions posted by coastguard1.

If you are watching via Sky, put on the Sky channel for BBC1, then press the "help" button on the Sky remote and use the cursor key to switch on subtitles from the onscreen menu.

We watch the TV direct from the set and we check which channels which we check from the Radio Times as to which to watch I am watching BBC1 news now and that is subtitled but not when I press the sub titled button but nothing appears..

Look in the main menu on the TV in the section named Language Settings and make sure that Subtitle is enabled

Ken, Which? tested this Toshiba TV and said it was one of the worst TVs ever to grace their test lab. It only scored 35%. They noted that the remote buttons were spongy so there's a chance that your remote is faulty. If this is a new TV that you have just bought then you have the right (under the Sale of Goods Act) to reject it and ask for a refund within 4 weeks of purchase. Toshiba TVs all score very poorly in the Which? tests.

You should consider buying a better 32 inch TV although I'm guessing you picked the Toshiba because it is cheap. Below £300 you will be struggling to find a Full HD Freeview HD TV with decent picture quality and the best of these (according to Which?) is the Samsung UE32ES5500, scoring 63% and currently selling for £300 at Currys/PC World. The Samsung also has voice enhancement for the hard of hearing

If this is too costly then the Panasonic Viera TX-L32X5B scoring 58% may suit although it is not a Full HD TV but HD Ready 1366 x 768. It does have Freeview HD however. This TV is currently selling for £200 at Electrical123. Which? said that subtitles worked perfectly with this TV and additionally it has a separate volume control for headphones.

'Tis far far better to have a Tuner that has the accessibility services on/off toggle from a button on the remote rather than put away in a menu.

The suggestion about looking in the menu was a 'just-in-case' idea

However the OP hasn't posted for a few days and I'm beginning to think that the TV and/or remote is faulty.

The TV was a wedding anniversary gift about 2 years ago
Anyway we have decided to change it for either a Samsung or a Sony 32 inch.
Has anyone heardbad reports about them.

Ken, If you give us the model numbers then we will be in a position to help you regarding bad reports. The top 4 manufacturers currently (LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony) make a wide range of models and in the main the majority of models attract favourable reviews with just the odd lemon.

Looking at Which? 32 inch TVs there aren't any Sony Best Buys (and yes I know some FMs don't rate Which? reviews but the OP might). Apart from the Samsung Best Buy I mentioned in my post above, the LG 32LS570T gets 67% and is the third rated Best Buy for 32 inch TVs. The two top models are both Samsung but considerably more expensive than the LG, and only 1 and 2% better in terms of picture quality.

The 2 Best Buys below the LG above are also LG; the LG 32LM620T at 65% but more expensive than the 570T, although Which? reckon the sound is better, and the LG 32LM3400 also at 65%, but this TV is not Full HD and does not have a Freeview HD tuner.

You totally fooled me with your opening post as I thought it was a new TV, rather than a fault with an old TV. I reckon other FMs thought so too. Perhaps if you start a thread in the future about something similar you could mention this point to save people wasting time. It would be nice if you could thank FMs for their help too. mac2708 went to a lot of trouble looking in the manual for you.

We are looking for a full HD Freeview or FreesatTV if possible and we went to our local Curry's and found the staff were less than helpful.
We are looking at buying a Panasonic TX-L32E6B, Samsung UE32f5500 or a JVC LT£"DA%"J32in
Un less you know bettet.
