Microwave Steamer - help
( I know google is my friend, but... )
Is there anyone out there who uses a microwave steamer ? Just tried potatoes for 5mins, then added carrots for another 5mins, then an additional 5mins on top of that. End results = everything was hard as rock. ![]() Methinks I may have overfilled it, so before I "try with 1/2 as much, and maybe cut them smaller" I'd like to know the kinda amount/sizes you use to get successful edible results. |

There are many microwave steamers. Amongst other things surely it will depend on the surface and how densely it is filled.
I never have a problem with mine. I always do things 2 minutes under and then let them continue to steam until I am ready to serve. Isn't there a guide of sorts with it? |

no guide apart from veg ~4-5mins and potatoes ~8-10mins.
I know I could do a bunch of trial and error but I didn't buy a great deal of veg today so haven't got the ability to do many t+e's, and I'm kinda hungry ![]() Luckily I can aways bung the potatoes in the deep fat fryer - wonder if I can dff carrots. ![]() [edit] just remembered I bought a pack of 40p rice with super clear instructions on the pack - my hunger WILL be abated.

I love steaming in the microwave but potatoes never work IMO ( unless they're jacket) having said that, I don't really like rice or pasta cooked this way either.

Tried the rice thing, not great results, probably due to me following an internet's page of "this is how you get perfect micro-rice every time, honest" instructions rather than the ones on the back of the pack. For the next go I'll use those - boiling water is used, along with ~15mins (iirc, pack is in kitchen and can't be asd to go check). AND whilst cooking the rice I can try again with some carrots in the top container, but not tatties - microing jackets is really the only way to go. |

[and finally] turns out the 15mins + boiling water did the trick... a little soggy but edible. One things I did learn was: 250g of rice is a lot... a LOT of rice.

so what things do you steam then, and how do you do it ????

Keep testing & add increments of 30 seconds to get it right for your taste. |
