i don't know if this would be classed as "classical" as such, but i really like this french song. I am looking for songs similar to this, whether it be spanish, french, italian etc.

The genre you're looking for is "torch song".

That genre is pretty loose (it's more about the subject matter, than the music).. so you get everything from

Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas

to

Belle Baker - I'll Always be in Love with You

to

Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody

Probably more a girl thing than a boy thing?

Torch songs, yes. Whitney Huston's version of 'I will Always Love You' is a great one of those.
Or Sinead O' Connor's 'Nothing. Compares 2 U'
Or Dusty Springfield's 'Anyone who had a heart ' or 'You don't have to say you love me'
Or, maybe, The Walker Bros 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore'

But closer to the sentiment of 'Je Ne Regrette Rien' must be Sinatra's 'My Way' or The Walker Bros 'No Regrets' .

And of course Scott Walker was a great fan of Jacques Brel.
