Some other networks do not even allow you to unlock the phone until the contract has finished ie 18-24 months. This is to protect the amount of money they have subsidised the Phone for.

Bare in mind an iPhone costs on average around £500. You didn't pay that at the start of your contact.
Vodafone will unlock contract phones (for free!!!!!) after two months. All very sensible as they then know payments are getting processed.

Other networks have these really weird rules! It's not as if people can avoid paying the rest of the contract!

I would complain, EE/Orange/TMUK have an outdated unlock policy.

Orange/EE will continually lie and fob you off, i have been waiting almost 2 months, every time i chase it up there's an excuse, they have my money, and still nothing. They dont seem to care. Another 2 weeks and they;ll be taken to the small claims court to get my money back.

What are your reasons for wanting to unlock?
It doesn't make much sense for them to have that restriction. You are required to pay the same amount per month whether you get the phone unlocked or not, so they'll still get their money.

I think it's designed to stop the people who take out numerous contracts with high-end phones, unlock them, sell them and do a runner and cancel the DD's.

6 months payment history proves they're a legitimate paying customer.

Like I say, I "think" that's the reason. I don't know officially.

It's a terrible rule if you ask me. Especially since even existing customers have to wait 6 months as well.

Thankfully the majority of phones can be unlocked outside of EE. And if you've bought an iPhone then you only have yourself to blame by tying yourself into Apples business ecosystem.

I was aware that a few makes could be - not that it was at all common (or even universal - as you claim!)

Not universal. But pretty much every android phone can be unlocked without having to go direct to the network.
