After watching it for the first time ever (thanks Youtube) compared to other BB's it could be considered tame now (I think it had more nudity then any BB I've seen since) but the star is clearly Nick from day one he treated it as it was a Game Show.Take him out of BB1 and it would go down as one of the worst ever. He dug himself into such Funny situations (saying he was in the army then looking like the most unfit man doing the obstacle course) and the lies about having a dead wife and been nice to Housemates then bitching about them behind their back . The Finding out of his plan is still gripping even now and you actually feel for him as he's questioned by all the housemates. After he leaves the show isn't the same.

Craig doesn't come out of it looking as saintly as he's portrayed now. He's lazy, a bit of a knob but him finding out about Nick was his saving grace and pathway to victory. He did improve after that. But at least he did good with his money.

How do you think this show holds up compared to the rest of BB? Does anyone even consider it their favourite BB?

I have fond memories of BB1. I would have liked Anna to win - she's still probably my favourite ever housemate. You're right about Craig, he made me cringe a fair bit and could be quite sanctimonious. I loved Darren and the chickens and there was something sweet about the simplicity of the show.

Nick was a great 'villain' at the time; a great housemate but SO tame in comparison to what we've seen since.

I'd love a return to the spirit and mood and pace of BB1 but that's probably not possible. It did what it said on the tin. It was a study of human interaction in a confined environment and the interference was minimal.

I remember really enjoying the last month. There was something quite relaxing - almost theraputic about it. Basically nice people, getting on with each other.

Without the 'Nasty' Nick thing, you do wonder how long the show would've carried on. I get the feeling it'd have been a bit too cult to have had the success it's had without it. And Mel was the hottest girl the shows ever had which is always a plus.

having just re-watched this series, i think it would be refreshing to do BB in its original format again,
simple but effective imo

I'm very fond of the female line-up of BB1. Such an interesting bunch (apart from latecomer Claire).
Darren was the only male I liked, though Nick's gameplan was sometimes funny to watch.

I don't understand why its seen as tame?

Its the rawest most original BB to date.

The housemates literally went nuts with cabin fever, Nichola telling Darren to sit on her face was amazing haha.

Carolines breakdown was gripping and she would have been removed from the house if it happened now.

I rewatched it 2 years ago and loved it just as much as when I first watched it.

People seem to think it was boring based on the unimaginative tasks they had but I hate the fact that the task team now have to put on big elaborate tasks just to entertain the audience.

I would much rather watch uninterrupted human behaviour.

It was crap.
I dont know what people thought was so good about watching them sit around all day talking about wine, clits, book deals, errections, wanting to have a hit record, piercings, boob jobs, tattoos and the weather.

The show was pretty dire although I watched as it was new for its time but in terms of how it stands up as a series..not well at all.
The house was a tinned dump,no sort of twists,a horrible group of housemates who offered nothing ( apart from nick ).
Anna was a real bore on the same lines as Dean and Elizabeth from BB2.

The highlight shows were a snooze fest for the most part.

Im so glad BB producers had the sense to move on and make a show with some excitement and interesting housemates.

Erm I don't recall them talking about that at all.

They were totally unaware how successful the show was.

Agree about Anna I think she is probably the most overrated housemate ever, I can't remember anything really interesting that she did and she certainly wasn't this lovely person that everyone makes her out to be. However the series as a whole I still like but not sure what I would think of it if I was to see it again. Nick was definitely the star of that series for me.

I would have loved BB14 to been a reboot going back to what the first one did. Just interesting normal people instead of some of the OTT personalities I feel has ruined BB over the years. Will it happen? Never looking at the rumour Housemates for this year (they look like Geordie shore cast offs). I think with a new presenter it would have been nice to go back to a simpler time.

Can I ask you SG-1 what is your favourite BB?

I feel the BB producers has taken the show down the toilet with the "interesting Housemates". It was okay with BB5 and 6 by 7it really was been overdone with the OTT housemates that now its just plain boring.

Bring it back to BB1 to BB 4 type housemates for me just normal folk.

I never found BB1 boring and I loved their conversations cause they actually talked about interesting stuff. Not magazine deals, snogging z-listers and talking about make up, but about everyday things. You might find that boring I found it entertaining.

Sorry but your wrong that they did not discuss it..Nicola often talked about wanting to be on totp..hence the whole its only a game thing..and one of them,i forget which one ( a girl ) wanted to have books published etc.
This idea that the BB1 HMs were not wannabies is a complete and total myth.
Sure they had no idea how successful the show would be..but thats not the point, its about being famous for 15 mins.

That's what I loved about BB1 its tasks which the housemates took serious and gave it their all. Which I think over the last few years they don't give a crap about cause they know they be rewarded with drink anyway. I love the BB team back then cause they didn't make it easy on the housemates. Like you said you see the housemates feel it too.

I think BB1 is great top 6 BB for me.

For some reason SG-1 seems to think all they did talk about was record and book deals but that was nothing compared to todays standards.

They were just everyday people.

Andy was a marketing product manager

Anna was an office manager originally

Caroline was unemployed at the time of the series, but had previously worked as a mortgage consultant, telephonist, special constable for West Midlands Police

Craig was a builder.

Claire worked in her mothers flower shop

Melanie was a computer systems salesperson

Nicola was an artist, art teacher and barmaid

Tom worked on a farm.

I believe Sada was a waitress but also did art aswell.

Now we get housemates who have been in movies, released singles and modelled for various magazines.

Nicola did want to be a singer - I remember that. But in the context of the first programme, they had no idea how popular the show would be - no expectations or plans on the back of it; they couldn't have. Clearly Nicola welcomed the exposure, but you could say that about anyone who appeared on TV anywhere - ever.

On Anna - I can't remember detail that far back but I do remember that she had a great dry wit and some hilarious one-liners; she was smart and kind and very, very adept at reading other people. She also changed her mind about Mel - admitted that she had been wrong about her and was a great conversationalist.

I think that's the problem with the last 6 BB's far too many involved in the industry who are only using the show as a stepping stone to flashing their boobs in lad's mags, or going to any party in town. Anytime I read that this Housemate is friends or is dating some z lister or has an Agent, it just really makes BB look bad. Whats the point in people auditioning anymore.

Well lets disect what your saying here.

They didnt talk about magazine deals because....?
The magazine deals did not really take off till around the time Heat revamped from its 1999 style magazine to one in 2002 that developed into a zeleb style magazine.
The market was not there for HMs prior to BB3.
And when it was there it was taken up immediately by most HMs that the mag showed interest in.
As time moved on we saw the emergence of lads magazines like zoo, nuts, fhm and although you seem to think that this is all they talked about you would be very wrong..there were a handful that discussed it..chanelle etc but theres been many a conversation about plenty of other things including everyday living...are you sugesting hms like glyn discussed mag deals,or makeup? If I listed every HM and percentaged them into who discussed just celebs, mag deals, and makeup and compared it with other things they discussed then my betting is the % of hms just talking about those things you mention would be very low..especially when the live feed was taken into consideration.

I am solidly behind the golden era of BB.
BB3,5,6,7.
I thought BB1 was miserably dull.
BB2 was better but would never work by todays viewing habits.
BB8-11 were the worst era of the show.

C5 take over had decent enough HMs but the editing levels plus lack of feed meant for me that it was nowhere near as good as the golden era of BB but I acknowledged the fact that BB12 and 13 much more so were far better than those last years on 4.

I loved last years housemates.
Lydia,Lauren,Deana and Caroline were imo the type of HMs you may well have got in the golden era.
The continual negativity took a good series and messed it up so badly that it became boring too watch at times.

Do you really see Nicola,Nick,Anna as your average joe type of person..really?
A compulsive liar,a lesbian ex nun and well lets not even get into nicola holts uniqueness.
Theres never been average joes on big brother,bb4 was closest they got to it but even they had the eccentricities of jon tickle.

A BB rewind back to the days of BB1 would fail.

I accept theres people out there that may want it but i guarantee most would be calling it the dullest series yet.

Not true.

They put Andy the 2nd evictee ever on its front cover and it Heats biggest selling issue of that time.

BB put them on the map.

BB was massive in magazines, tv ect the housemates were just unaware of it.

I remember there was even a tv streaming live feed in Trafalgar Square at one point and the news was talking about "is this the future"? lol

Im talking about the deals for magazines, not one offs..jade was a regular feature in heat..so yes it is true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_%28magazine%29

Heat was launched in February 1999 as a general interest entertainment magazine, at a cost of more than £4m. However, unlike other Emap (now Bauer) magazine launches before and after, it was not an immediate success, with a circulation below 100,000. A series of revamps quickly repositioned the magazine as a less serious, more gossip-oriented magazine aimed at women, and circulation quickly grew. A series of high-profile celebrity relationships, such as Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt provided ample material, while reality shows such as Big Brother and Pop Idol grew popular at just the right time to help fill pages. Heat achieved record sale figures when Jade Goody had a make-over and was first on the front cover after her stint in Big Brother 3 (2002) and later when Nikki Grahame and Pete Bennett from Big Brother 7 split and Nikki spoke exclusively to Heat (2006).

Nick was way ahead of his time. Without him, I think it would have taken several more series to get HMs who were such great game players.

Just because Jade issues received the highest sales doesn't mean the magazine deals for housemates hadn't "took off" though.

BB1 created the zelebrity culture with housemates from BB1 literally turned into household names.

Most of the housemates made a lot of money from newspaper, magazine deals and tv interviews with numerous contestants even having their own tv shows.
