I'm not sure whether there's been a thread on Modern Family before, but I reckon it's about time for another one!

I've just finished Season 2 and from the bits I've seen of Seasons 3 and 4, the quality has slightly dipped.

What do you all reckon?

For me, Season 4 is as strong as the first.

Cam: I knew when I was 5.
Mitchell: Everyone knew when you were 5.

You are basing that opinion on "bits" of seasons 3 and 4 you have seen? I have seen every episode of Modern Family. I think it has maintained its high quality throughout its run.

'And somewhere called 'Mit'
'That's M.I.T.!'
'I know how to spell it!'

I think there has been a dip in season 4, don't get me wrong it's still excellent, but increasingly there are scenes and gags which I've seen before on the show. Which is hardly surprising given there has been upwards of 80 episodes.

I'm rewatching series 1 currently, and must admit its dipped slightly, but not surprising. Still very very good though, maybe just more formulaic now

I meant that I've seen a few episodes, rather than the season as a whole. It's still wonderful and much better than nearly everything else on TV, it's just that sometimes I've noticed that the story lines get a little weaker.

I mean Dylan trying to move in with Cam & Mitch?! Really?!

Apart from that I'm still always charmed by the show, mainly due to the characters themselves and the performers. It's definitely Sofia Vergara's turn for the Emmy this year!

And as I'm sure it's been said countless times before, the show is always at its best when the different 'families' come together and bounce off each other.

I have only ever seen season 1 and trying to find a channel who is showing it from the start of season 2. I really liked what i saw and it genuinely made me LOL.

It's still good, but it suffers from the same problem lots of long-running sitcoms do. The writers struggle to find new funny lines, and fall back on character traits that they think are an easy way to get laughs. We now get Gloria being loud and Cam and Mitchell arguing almost every week, not to mention Manny being a wierdo.

I agree, her 'little madam' attitude is awesome

She's very cute, a great little character.

She's fabulous! When she calls Cam and Mitch 'ladies'

Surely that's just consistency? Gloria is a loud person and Cam and Mitchell are one of those couples that tend to argue a lot (although not seriously). If they suddenly stopped acting this way it would be out of character. I don't think they fall back on their traits though. There are still plenty of other jokes. I wouldn't really say Manny is a weirdo. Maybe a bit weird for a child, but he will grow out of it.

I haven't enjoyed it as much this series, I've preferred The Middle which has been really strong this season

I was just thinking the other day how it's returned to form recently in the current series.

Storylines/characters will need to move on if it's going to carry on being successful. As others have said, Lily becoming quite a sassy little madam is a good development, but they do need to develop/mature all the other children, and they haven't really done that yet - they sent Hayley away to College, got her sent back, all with her ending up hardly any different from before.

Like most people have been saying Season 4 some episodes dipped below the normal very high standards. Some of the Lily scenes have been excellent.

In the real world she was ill with Kidney trouble...so she was 'sent to College'....leaving the show for a while.

Did she have to be different when she came back....

Did anyone catch Modern Family on Sky last night? Just watched it, Lilly is such a great little character. She was on form yet again this week, she's making this series imo.

Agree...
But I would have kept the Money.

And Haley keeps the Tooth Fairy outfit....

Gloria: You had a 3 hour nap on Sunday.
Jay: I was tired.
Gloria: From what, your 2 hour nap on Saturday?

Haley looked ridiculously young in last nights episode. It's hard to believe the actress is older than me. She looks like a teenager.

Lily is amazing. She steals the scene everytime she is in one. I could watch a whole spin off sitcom with Mitch, Cam and Lily.

Completely agree.

Lily "daddies daddies, the tooth fairy came"

Cam - "oooo that's so exciting, what she bring you"

Lily - "Well, some stickers, a toothbrush, and a hundred dollar bills"

'a hundred dollar bills' Sooo cute

I think seasons 1-3 really are top quality. I feel season 4 shot itself in the foot with the premise of the new baby being a big factor when in truth it barely mattered in the end. By introducing a new character but sticking to more or less the same dynamic it undercut it's own premise of a new and different dynamic. I'd have liked to have seen Jay having to cope with being a grandad and a new father more, maybe even turning to Phil in an effort to understand how he's got such a close relationship with Luke despite their age difference before accepting they are just weird but it's about taking an interest in your kids interests, not trying to make them just like you or making them compete like Claire and Mitchell did, then offering to take Manny to some musical he wanted to attend where they run into Shorty "taking my cousin out to get some culture" before cutting to an aside to the camera to have Jay say "I can get at least another 3 years of practice in with Manny and who knows, maybe this kid will actually take after his old man and be good at sports after all!"

Sadly that didn't happen and so it felt like a series with many missed opportunities.

Didn't miss any opportunities for me.

I think the writers got this season just about right.
