Every day I get loads of rubbish spam on my iPad mini, some in foreign languages. Is there a method of stopping this? It doesn't appear on lap/desk tops.

It's in the email, ntlworld.com. I don't get it on main PC only iPad.

It's because your PC email software is doing some spam filtering whereas the iPad doesn't or does it poorly.
You've got two options: both of which involve moving to GMail (or outlook.com but I find GMail's spam filter slightly better).
A) Either move your email account to GMail permanently. Advantages include: proper support for email, contacts and calendar, webmail access, both POP and IMAP access, easy setup on most devices and good spam filtering. You also get to keep the account even if you change ISPs.
B) Keep your ntlworld email but use GMail as a middleman. This means setting up a GMail account that collects email from your ntlworld account. Your iPad then retrieves from the gmail account which will have scrubbed your inbox for spam. You can also configure the gmail account so it can send email that looks like it came from the ntlworld account.
Personally, I recommend option A.

What it fails to mention is if ntlworld email address now have a Spam folder like Virgin addresses? If they do then is it possible your iPad is downloading all folders including the Spam one?
If the other devices are using POP then they may not download the Spam folder only the Inbox. If the iPad is using IMAP it might download the lot. Though you'd think it would also have a Spam folder
Oh and reading those FAQs it looks like Virgin use Gmail as their overall provider. Wonder if that also applies to ntlworld addresses?
And of course it's always possible the Spam filter has been turned off in the web mail client.

Ah yes, I forgot to ask, is the spam appearing in your inbox or just in your spam folder?

It appears in the spam folder. I'm a bit wary of altering things for fear of messing things up.

In that case it is perfectly normal. If it's not happening on the other devices you have accessing the same mail account then it could be down to differences in the way they are configured, eg using IMAP or POP to retrieve the messages.
If you know how to compare the settings then you could try and copy the way your laptop etc are set up onto the iPad so you see the same view on each.
