They just don't. There are a few comedians who can come up with a whole new 2-hour stand-up show every year or so (Dara O Briain can, as does Jimmy Carr), but most of them just have one show that they keep performing to new audiences. When some of that material gets used on TV, they seriously weaken their act.
Topical shows work because it is somehow easier to come up with a joke in response to a current photo or headline than to write a piece from scratch. (Frankie seemed to come up with a lot of his material on MtW and then tried to use it in his live shows, which didn't work.) For the same reason, both Dara and Jimmy use a lot of audience interaction in their live shows. Generally, the more topical a joke is the funnier it is.

It's widely believed they pick the topics for the stand-up round themselves, from their acts. That's why there's never any dispute about which comedian will do which topic when it comes up - as opposed to the other rounds where they all try to pitch in at once.
