Can't picture the new guy this week but I have seen all Good News standups so must have seen him in the past
I really enjoyed last week's show. It's been mentioned many times in this thread already but I too enjoyed the running Farm Simulator jokes. Milton Jones' Andy Murray impressions were very funny!
It's a shame someone on this thread didn't like Hal Cruttenden. He reminds me of Miles Jupp but better.

People who are going to end up complaining that he's always going to bang on about being Asian, well...
He states pretty clearly "Only 10% of my material is about me being Asian, the other 90% is about my concerns with white people".
He was fine and his material wasn't really based on culture at all - just a couple of one-liners. The routine about teaching was really good.

He did the same routine on Good News. Not surprising, they're going to shoehorn their best material into the show.
Noticed the other night that Milton Jones' Universe tour is on telly. You can listen to most of the jokes that he's gone on to tell on MtW if you watch it.
Really enjoyed it (just watched on IPlayer), very funny episode

I still think it's strange that they don't have enough time for 4 standups but they do for a usually rotten voice over round.
They're getting younger/newer comedians on and they should have material to use that hasn't been heard on every other panel/comedy show.
I think Rob Beckett is good. I'm not totally sold on his comedy but for a newbie he gets himself involved and doesn't just sit there making a couple of comments in the whole show.

A great episode again - now that the gladiatorial feel of the show has gone they need to get more women on - Dara has said himself the feel of the show has changed recently (good bad thing?).
Andy can be proud of his Ryanair time travel gag.
And hurrah for Hindu comedians - I can safely say that 100% of the Hindu comedians I have seen have been bloody funny...i.e. one.
Romesh needs to get a simpler second name though - or just go by the name Romesh...still can't pronounce his second name or remember it...

I'm not sure time is the issue, I suspect (perhaps wrongly) that it's due to the number of guests who are prepared to use some of their material during that round and others who'd rather keep it for their own stand-up show or for something else.

His shiney white and blonde image initially made me think: done for material purposes...which to an extent it probably is but he is very good. Looking at his 'CV' he started stand-up in 2009 and has won a slew of awards since then - good going.

That's exactly what it is. Material isn't easy to just create and if someone has heard material on TV and then live they feel short-changed...strange when singers who start singing their most famous song don't get 'HEARD IT' shouted at them.
The ITV show 'The Comedians' was one of the first stand-up compilation shows and a few of the guys who appeared on it said it ruined their careers as they only had one set which they did on TV and then everyone had seen it. There are still circuit comedians who still do have one set but the good ones change their material...to an extent this has improved comedy overall but made it harder work for some comedians.

That would seem awfully counter productive though. They have the chance to show off thier material on national tv. It's the best advert they can get apart - apart from Apollo/Roadshow (BBC) and Comedy Store (CC) the best they'd get would be a guest stuck on the end of the sofa during a chat show.
Even the newbies have been doing their stuff in clubs for several years and should have plenty of material to dip into.
I would think it more likely that the production thought that their using up time with pre-rehearsed routines when they could have more disscussion/banter/improv in the other rounds.

Comedians these days should know better.
I realise they'll have tv matieral that could be totatlly different to their live material but they should be able to pull something out of the bag to promote themselves.
I'm sure many of the ones in pubs/clubs would love the chance to do a spot on tv.
Also the other thing is that not everyone is a comedy fan/follower.
I tend to watch alot of the comedy on telly so I may see the same routine more than once. Others may only watch MtW or only watch Roadshow because the like that McIntyre fellow and so to them it will be the first time hearing the routine, or of even knowing of the comedian.
Lots of, if not most, stand ups wouldn't be able to do most of their live act on tv due to censorship.
The amount of time they actually perform in MTW's stand up rounds, as opposed to standing around waiting, would probably be one or two minutes at the very most. It wouldn't surprise me if they knew in advance what the topics were to be so if they can't come up with a couple minutes fresh material for national tv exposure then they perhaps shouldn't even be there.

I don't think anyone will be surprised by that. It's been obvious from the start - it's called the standup round and oh look, a topic that I have a bit on has popped up.

You seem to think creating comedy for stand-up is that easy - it isn't - off the cuff one liners is easy setting up a 2 or 3 minute mini-set isn't.

It might have something to do with there being so few guests- there are 38 guest slots in this series but only 16 guests (Ed Byrne and Josh Widdecombe appear five times apiece), it would be quite easy for them to accidentally burn through their entire current set.
One-liner comics like Milton Jones, Gary Delaney and Stuart Francis might be at a slight advantage in the stand-up round because they can bring in bits from a few shows and mix them up rather than commit to doing a bit from one show, but they're the minority.
I appreciate thinking up one liners and jokes is hard, but wouldnt they have been briefed beforehand about what the topic is about

They just don't. There are a few comedians who can come up with a whole new 2-hour stand-up show every year or so (Dara O Briain can, as does Jimmy Carr), but most of them just have one show that they keep performing to new audiences. When some of that material gets used on TV, they seriously weaken their act.
Topical shows work because it is somehow easier to come up with a joke in response to a current photo or headline than to write a piece from scratch. (Frankie seemed to come up with a lot of his material on MtW and then tried to use it in his live shows, which didn't work.) For the same reason, both Dara and Jimmy use a lot of audience interaction in their live shows. Generally, the more topical a joke is the funnier it is.

It's widely believed they pick the topics for the stand-up round themselves, from their acts. That's why there's never any dispute about which comedian will do which topic when it comes up - as opposed to the other rounds where they all try to pitch in at once.
