Was outside with my Nexus and it was briefly sitting on a magazine, so not exactly on the grass. Anyway, I came in, powered it off, connected the charger and nothing. So, with the charger still connected (and having been tested on my phone) I tried to turn it on. Nothing. So I tried powering on with the volume up also pressed. Again nothing. In desperation tried powering on with the volume down pressed, but still bothing. Then I panicked, thinking I had somehow got some damp into it. Googled 'my Nexus won't boot up' and came across advice to hold down the power on button for up to 30 seconds, and that did the trick. Connected the charger again, it charged and have now powered off and the white battery charging symbol is now there. But that was odd, and apparently not uncommon. Anyone else have this problem before?

It's probably just a coincidence. If any moisture had gotten into the device, button combinations probably wouldn't do anything
Yeah this happens to me sometimes. Rarely I find myself having to hold the power button for longer than 15 seconds before it turns on. I'm not sure whether this is a hardware or software issue though, as most of the time it turns on quickly.
It happens quite regularly. It's a bit scary the first time but once you soft reset it goes back to normal.

Well, this is academic as I have now got it up and running again, but the battery was most certainly not run down. I was about to charge it after using it because I like to keep it charged having before been caught out with the battery not being charged when I wanted to use it.

Heatwave? Come on, it's nice and sunny, that's all. Some bloody heatwave if this is a heatwave. Trouble with us Brits is that we are so accustomed to awful weather that we are pathetically grateful when it is rather nice for a change.
Did you have this in full sunlight?
An ios device when it gets hot will show on screen that the temperature is too hot and you can do nothing, until it has cooled down to the correct temperature, then it just starts working again. Not noticed that Android does this.

No, this was about 6pm last night when it was still pleasant and sunny by the sun wasn't hot.
It happens from time to time...
Short of corrupting the bootloader, it's pretty difficult to hardbrick the Nexus 7.

A very useful resource if you think your Nexus 7 is hardbricked... chances are good that's its just gone into APX mode, and can easily be resurrected again.

I would say the most useful thing to know would be this:
Nexus 7 will not start up
If your Nexus 7 tablet will not start up at all or shuts down after you see the screen with the colorful X, it might be that the battery is fully drained. When the battery is fully drained, the tablet will not turn on.
To recharge a fully drained battery:
- Connect the charger to your Nexus 7, plug the charger in to an electrical outlet, and immediately go to the next step.
- Press and hold the power button.
- When the screen lights up (indicating the device is on), continue pressing the power button, and press and hold the volume down button at the same time.
The word Start with an arrow drawn around it appears on the screen.
- Press the volume down button repeatedly to cycle through the arrow options until it says Power off; then press the power button to select Power off.
- When your Nexus 7 turns off, disconnect the charger, and then reconnect it.
- A picture of a battery appears, indicating that your Nexus 7 is charging.
Charge the tablet for at least 30 minutes before trying to start it again. Then keep charging it until it is fully charged.
