Facebook blamed for iPhone battery drain

Interesting. Might be worth trying an alternative just to see what happens. I did use Tweetdeck on my Galaxy S3, but I see that's not available on iOS any more .. |

Friendcaster does Facebook if you really don't want to use the official app, or just use the mobile version of the FB website.

I didn't think it was possible for an app to come out of sleep every 10 seconds. Apps are only allowed to continue running in the background if they're completing a specific task.

From reports on that rather unsubstantiated throttling claim(just no throughput data again to back up his 2nd claim claim) we had an A T & T quote.
" iPhones are very complex devices with a very complex OS. The OS eats much more data, even when in idle mode, than most phones on the market. " |

Which doesn't seem to ring true at all when you think about how restricted iOS is for background apps and multitasking, compared to Android. That's possibly an old quote.

That throttling thing is falling over. I always wondered why there was no real data on his first hack. I guess that site guy simply never knew what he was doing. Don't most apps try and feed you billions of ads? Its why I keep mine to an essential minimum. |

Old? iOS has always been restricted. Initially it just couldn't multithread, then it just didn't let certain apps "multitask".
I wasn't saying iOS used to be unrestricted. |

Well I'm going to give hootsuite a run-out just out of curiosity. I really would prefer tweetdeck, but it's not to be ..

Well i've lost 11% battery in 9 hours so far with Facebook uninstalled - almost no usage though, to be fair, as it's been idle overnight. I'll take it all the way down to 1%, however long that might be, and then re-install Facebook for comparison.

Over the last two weeks mine has started to drain really bad even when idle. Last night I went to sleep with it about 78% and woke up with it at 58%. It used to be pretty good up to 2 weeks or so ago

I've noticed FB sometimes wakes up to get the location.. Why it would need that I'm unsure.
I have one iPhone with no FB app and it uses roughly the same battery overnight as the one with the latest FB app installed.. Biggest draw on battery especially when traveling would be the traffic reporting service google/apple which can be switched off. |

I usually keep apps running but I've turned them all off and haven't opened up Facebook all morning and it's loads better than it was. Yesterday I could charge it and in no time with just slight use it was at 92% and was losing about 15% or more overnight just idle. So far it does seem Facebook is the main hog and I'll be switching apps off in the future

I do also have GPS turned on all the time, but only because i read in a few places that it doesn't actually consume any battery power until a specific app calls on it.

The standard facebook client doesn't seem to do anything in the background apart from notify of new messages. It definitely doesn't refresh the feed when its in the background. |

That doesn't seem to be the case, at least on mine. With location services enabled, battery life is diabolical.

The biggest drainer of my battery is being in an LTE area, even when the phone is in standby.
Has anyone else found that? Even after apple replaced the battery on my phone. |

^^^
On a kind of related note, the biggest drain for me is being on 3G instead of wifi. |

I suppose, for the sake of argument, if you've got GPS turned on and location services active in Facebook and it does indeed wake up regularly then that could certainly account for some heavy battery use if it also tries to determine your location.

Are you using apps that make use of location services though? If not, there shouldn't be any effect on battery life. An app is only using location services when the icon appears in the status bar. Using GPS based apps will kill the battery pretty quickly.
Thus Wifi gets used a lot for GPS. I do not think it can be turned off if location is on. Pass any wifi hotspot and you will certainly find your phone location logged at the Apple cloud tagged to that router. |

The iPhone appears to works in quite a strange way.

Yep, I did say strange way. Obviously it helps Apple keep track of all routers to enhance that location service. I'd suggest it offets the negative effect the aluminium housing has on satellite GPS. |
