What does everyone think about Vodafone's latest tax affairs?

Not to bad many companies pay hardly any, and honestly aren't most of Vodafone's profits due to there 45% stake in Verizon Wireless anyway which is an American not British company. Many companies get away with paying little or no corporate tax and until the system changes it will continue like it does now. I care more about if they can revolutionize there network updating both current hardware and bringing in new hardware to deliver a good solid 3G/4G coverage which they have the spectrum and money to do.

Great news for Shareholders time pop some Bollinger Champagne

Im sure the Inland revenue will come to some cosy cut price deal with them as usual

Still at least Ofcom got some money out of them for 4G spectrum

Very true I should of mentioned that. I think Vodafone is at a cross road either will succeed very well or will fail spectacularly and waste millions.

Just owning the spectrum is no guarantee.. Don't forget they also have the biggest chunk of 3G spectrum but have the lowest level of 3G coverage!

An investment which they clearly will be looking to get back from their customers, of course, so i genuinely don't think this is in any way an excuse for what they do. It reminds me of the situation with npower who also paid little/no corporation tax due to them investing massively in green energy (again, an investment which they will look to get back from their ordinary, tax paying customers). The whole thing just makes a mockery of the tax system imo.

I think if we want them to pay more tax we should change the law to make them.

Unless they were asked to pay tax and refused, I have no issue. As others say, change the law, don't blame the companies that operate within it.

Don't blame a company from LEGALLY finding a way to save cash... Blame the Govt for not being on the ball.

I agree with all the final points.

I find it particularly galling when a commons select committee drags in a company executive and berates them for following the tax law. It is the politicians that are at fault. The EU or G8 or whichever group could set up international treaties backed up with national laws to stop this. But it is hard so they would rather deflect the blame.

True they do now but they didn't up until last year Three and Vodafone had the biggest for years then EE over took and now it back to Vodafone at top and O2 second. But I see your point Vodafone is probably has the best spectrum of any network at the moment. With a mix of 800,900, 2100,2600. It needs to just shell out the money to get it properly rolled out and it looks like they are willing to do that. It will be interesting to see next year how it works out for them.

You had politicians previously saying that we should incentivise the rich by lowering their taxes.
They say this would lead to them paying more tax.

Obviously when this happens to go to zero they will then generously send the exchequer a cheque for £1

It does help convince a country to stay in the country and employ people here though. I'd rather Vodafone paid no tax but employed 1,000s of people than paid some tax and didn't employ anyone

Yes, I defended Starbucks, but only on a relative basis.

It is impossible to defend that race to the bottom though at least they do have plenty of bricks and mortar jobs.
