I have listened to Power of the Daleks, Evil of the Daleks and The Wheel In Space, all of which are good stories. The Dominators, The Krotons and especially The War Games all deserve an honourable mention

Tomb of the Cybermen was once the best most scary, atmospheric and downright brilliant story in the history of the programme............and then someone went and found it. Suddenly it became just ok. But I still like it, and it was Matt Smiths favourite.

I recently listened to the audio of The Macra Terror, and that comes highly recommended. Fury from the Deep is good as well, but have a feeling if it is ever found, then opinions might change.

For me I would love to see Power and Evil of the Daleks returned, and also the Faceless ones

I was watching The War Games a few nights ago. I felt it was overrun by a few episodes but overall it is a good, solid story.

Amazing, though. It never actually gets boring.

Hee hee, the 'croutons' - a disturbing soup-based parasite that gains entry to it's prey by mingling with bits of dried bread.. Best typo i've seen for a while..

I'm a Tomb of the cybermen fan. It's repetitive, with them awakening and refreezing so often, but it's a masterclass from troughton.. Pure utter 'doctor perfection' from him all through.. (IMO) A stunning performance.

Love Tomb of the Cybermen and Web of Fear...can't stand The Dominators and The Mind Robber.

Honourable mentions for The Invasion and The War Games, and can't wait to see the animated version of The Moonbase.

Of the few sadly complete stories IMO The War Games and The Mind Robber are terrific, Tomb of the Cybermen is very good, The Seeds of Death and The Krotons are okay and The Dominators is pretty appalling and (unusually for Who, thank heavens) rather mean-spirited. (Bl**dy pacifist hippies!)

Also think The Invasion is great fun (Kevin Stoney; Legend ) and going by the episodes still existing, I'd particularly love to see 'The Web of Fear' and 'Evil of the Daleks' in full.

Troughton was terrific (as was Billy Boy; can't put a cigarette paper between them, tbh) but as far as variety of stories and crazy imagination, I prefer the Hartnell era.

I'll throw The Enemy Of The World into the mix, great to see Patrick Troughton in a dual role.

Tomb of the Cybermen, Evil of the Daleks, Web of Fear, Ice Warriors

I think they realized during the 2nd Doctor's era that they couldn't rely on the Daleks as the only popular regular monster, so suddenly a whole host of other ones popped up - Cybermen (their first story was the 1st Doctor's last but they really made their mark with the 2nd Doctor), Yetis, Ice Warriors ect. While they gave the Daleks a rest that would last 4 or 5 years.

I think that kind of adaptability is what allowed the show to grow.

I love the Troughton Era. It is in essence what Doctor Who should be, scary and atmospheric and I think the fact you watch in black and white adds to this. In some ways the old video releases where there is more crackling and other minor background noises add to it as well, some of it is not so noticeable in the DVD releases.

As for the stories themselves, for me the Dalek stories are still the best ever imo , it's a shame they weren't both of the excellent Season 5 as they far outclass the other stories in Season 4 bar perhaps The Moonbase. These other stories are okay in their own right and in some Seasons would fair quite well. These two Dalek stories are definitely up there with the best of the era and if they had been in Season 5, it would have been awesome!

Season 5 is one of the best run of stories ever(better than any New Series Series even imo) and only Season 13 comes anywhere near to matching it in terms of quality(Though 19 is my personal fave). I think Fury From The Deep is one story that I'm not as keen on but I acknowledge it is a very good story, as is the perceived weaker story, The Enemy Of The World. The two Yeti stories, The Ice Warriors and The Tomb Of The Cybermen, definitely are right up there as well with the best the Troughton era has to offer.

Season 6 is a more varied Season but it dips away in quality. The Dominators is one episode too long, The Mind Robber is one of the better stories of the Season. The Invasion doesn't suffer from either being 8 episodes or being light on it's main villains in The Cybermen. The next two stories are just okay, but The Space Pirates is for me the worst story of the era, and it doesn't help only one episode exists or that there are too few telesnaps available. It is agonisingly slow as well.

The War Games is a fine finale to the era. I would agree with previous comments about it's length. The padding is obvious at times and it does start to sag around the seventh and eighth episodes before picking itself up again for the final two.

All in all a fantastic era barring the odd clunker here and there.
