With Apple's 2013 WWDC starting tomorrow, I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to discuss the products/services that may be unveiled over the next few days.

Mashable has posted an article listing some of the things that can be expected from the event...

Im expecting something very colourful as the '7' logo on the sign has a rainbow effect and the other signs have many colours. Maybe they will announce the new cheaper iPhone in many colours or the iOS 7 changes are very to do with colour.

Probably, more features which iOS should've gotten years ago. I also think some (maybe not all) of iOS' UI will go flat.

Also, maybe iRadio?

I am looking forward to this, I have a feeling Apple will come out with a confident showing. I suspect it won't be game changing but they will be able to demonstrate that they have listened to community feedback and began implementing a change in direction and ethos at the company. I do genuinely believe however that anything iPhone related will be software only. I don't expect anything "magical" but I personally would be happy for iOS to receive a face lift and for them to also open up the API so sharing is easier within iOS similar to how it is in Android. It can't be right that I have to open up an application manually when I want to share an image or link. Only twitter and facebook are approved because they are heavily integrated. I want to see more opening up of the system to allow room for more innovation. Even dynamic icons that say updated the weather or shown how many emails were unread as opposed to the generic red circle notification. Apple doesn't have to change everything all I ask for is some progression and sadly that hasn't happened all that much of late.

Apple will probably have something to say about Maps and how it's supposedly got better over time. I disagree, and I've just written this:

People who know me on here will know that I'm generally an Apple fan, but I think Maps is utterly dreadful.

Good blog post, have to agree (despite my own similar Apple leanings). I was similarly optimistic when they first released it that crowd sourced feedback would result in rapid improvement. I fed back a number of mistakes 9 months ago (including a shop 200 metres from my house that hasn't existed for 20 years) and not one of them has been updated. Lost all motivation to help them improve it.

The same comment could be made about Android. I have been using both Android and IOS in equal measure for the last few months and I have been quite surprised by missing features in Android that I have taken for granted in IOS for years.

Apple really need to step their game up with regard iOS. Any of their usual "do the bare minimum" isn't going to cut it any more.

Very good post. Good points in particular about POI inaccuracy and about how it ignores where you are located and brings up search results for the US.

Thanks for the positive comments!

If I were in charge of Apple Maps, I'd be really worried. I'd like to see figures on how many people use it, other than when the system forces them to. Apple can't go back now, but it already feels like a dead project to me. It hasn't improved, I'd be surprised if people are still using it voluntarily, and I can't see how they're going to get people to go back to it.

I ditched it early on for Google Maps via a webapp, and then of course started using the proper Google Maps app when that was out.

I occasionally give it a go every now and then, just to see if the POIs or searches have improved... and of course as they haven't (for me), I stick with Google Maps.

Like you, I have Apple Maps in a "pointless apps" folder on its own homescreen, with Stocks, Voice Memos, and Passbook...I also keep Safari in there as I use Chrome.

Given that Apple is unlikely to allow us to change default apps, I wish that Google would link up its own apps even more than it has already done...

The Gmail app lets you open web links in Chrome, YouTube links in YouTube, and Google Maps links in Google Maps.

The YouTube app & Google+ app both let you open web links in Chrome.

What Google should do is link them in other directions, so that if you see an email link on Chrome you can choose to use the Gmail app, or if you want to share a Google Maps location or YouTube video via email you can use the Gmail app, instead of the native Mail.app.

Did you notice that Instagram also eventually chose to bypass Apple Maps? Their 'Open in Maps' button never worked properly because of it. Someone would geotag a photo in the Instagram app (which uses the Foursquare database). You'd press the 'Open in Maps' button and Apple Maps would display the correct point on the map for about half a second then, realising it didn't recognise the location, would run a search and display a totally different location. Sometimes it would display a map of the whole world with a couple of pins in it.

Now, the 'Open in Maps' button uses the Google Maps app if you have it installed.

I've never used Instagram. It's good though that it can open Google Maps - I didn't realise other apps could do that, although I know that non-Google apps can open Chrome so it makes sense for that to have been expanded.

It has to come good eventually as location is such an integral part of today's mobile devices, but I'm amazed at how slowly Apple are getting there.

Looks like streaming is once again only available on Macs and iOS.

Flat as a pancake. Seems to be a trend on android too, a lot of top apps are losing the 3d look.
