Ok so im going to buy the Sony Xperia J next week. I have a Vivacity atm (T-Mobile's own) and I have a normal sized sim card and not the newer smaller ones.

My question is the xperia J takes the mini sim cards correct? And if so....can I go to my local T-Mobile shop or EE as they are now called and get a mini sim card but keeping my number at the same time? I don't want to change my number and if I can keep it and get my number transferred onto the new mini sd card then great.

Is there a cost involved to get a new sim card??

The normal SIM as used in the Vivacity is a mini SIM. (The original SIM s were the size of a bank card). The smaller ones are micro and nano Sims.

The J uses a mini SIM , so you will not need to change.

No......I placed my old sim card in the vivacity....I didn't have or insert a micro sim card. There is only two types of sim the bigger one and the micro one. Currently in my vivacity I have the old, original sim. So if I have the original sin and the J uses a micro I'd have to buy micro one yes???? And f so can I transfer my number onto it?

The j uses the same sim you have already .... I just got one the other day on a tmobile upgrade and it's a standard sim

There have been 4 versions of sim cards
Full size card ie bank card size that you used to slot in the bottom of a phone
Mini sim ... This is the one you are using just now
Micro sim .... Used on iPhone 4 and up and one windows phones I think, probably android too
Nano sim ... Used on iPhone 5 iPad 4 and probably the s4 too

At least that's how I remember it ... Might be wrong though

Anyway your current sim will be fine to get bak to your question

Edit picture paints a thousand words

What do you mean by 'No' ? I'm a bit miffed that you seem to have skimmed over my post.

Yes. I mean no.

I just think they didn't understand.

It is nice to see the four types of sim being mentioned. Go into your local phone shop and ask about a phone taking a mini sim sim and watch the confusion from the numpties.

I'm really confused now.

I understood there was only 2 types of sims. The Small one and the Micro one that's coming out. I cannot remember the sim the size of a bank card lol and I've never heard of them.

This is the sim card I have:

^ The typical and most common sim card used (I had no idea they were called mini sim)

These are Micro sims correct? The tiny little one in bottom right corner : http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/...en-580x386.jpg

So which does the J have....Mini, the one I am currently using in the vivacity and the most typical sim card out there or does it take the newer Micro sim card?

The manual for the phone is here

http://www-support-downloads.sonymob...Android4.1.pdf

Page 9 shows how to insert the SIM. It also specifically warns against trying to use a micro SIM. Which sort of suggests it uses a "normal" SIM
