Do you prefer smartphones compared to laptops or desktops?. I much prefer computers - I'm phobic of making phone calls and I find smartphones to be small and fiddly. I used to have a Blackberry and someone once said she used hers more than her laptop and thought they were great because you didnt have to switch your computer on to do most tasks, since there are apps for most things etc(!).

I cant imagine ever using a phone more than my laptop. I think my fingers would hurt if I usd a phone for too long. I have a £50 Samsung smartphone and thats more than enough for me - the screen is pretty small so I find it a bit frustrating because of that. I have an iPod I use in the morning to go online and check emails etc. before I get up but I cant imagine wanting to use a phone very much, only now and again when away somewhere or as necessary.

I only thought to ask after seeing a post in another topic suggesting the next big thing in terms of communicating with people is IM apps through smartphones. I can't see me taking part in that. Phones always seemed alien to me but maybe thats just me?.

Smartphones, tablets and laptops have their uses. I tend to use the laptop more than the rest because it's much easier to type and do various tasks with a keyboard and trackpad.

As for typing on smartphones, non-tactile feedback makes posting more than a few paragraphs an absolute pain on your fingers.

There are some things that are better done on laptops compared to both smartphones and tablets.

I use my smartphone and tablet a lot more often than the computer or laptop mainly because I'm out a lot. I can also just pick up my phone and be on the web immediately rather than waiting for the computer to fire up.

I like a big screen, a keyboard and a mouse so it's desktops or any sort of device plugged into the tv + wireless keyboard and mouse for me.

Don't really use my phone for that much outside of making phone calls and texting.

Desktops all the way, laptops a close second. Smartphones are just that, a phone that happens to have a bit of processing power affording them the luxury of running simple apps/games. They can't run software like Solidworks Flow or graphically intensive games like a dedicated desktop PC does.

I prefer using a laptop but I do go on the net a lot on my phone. It is fiddly and I make loads of typos on my phone but I'd rather that than no internet at all when I'm away from a laptop.

I prefer my laptop. I love my laptop.
Smartphones are just too small to do stuff on. Plus sometimes it can take a while to load.

Each platform has its benefits. A desktop is useful for working on anything that needs lots of space or multiple screens. Tablets are good for relaxing and looking at a few websites or watching a video. Smart-phones are better for when you are on the move and want to look up something quickly or play a game while you are waiting for someone.

I don't even necessarily find it quick to use my smartphone though - probably because I mainly use it at work and the reception is dodgy, so I have to walk around alot to find somewhere that offers more than zero to one signal bar before it'll be able to retrieve data. Then you have to load the browser, go in to favourites and most visited sites to find the site to go to usually and wait a while for it to load. Navigation can be a pain on phones too, squashing a large-ish site such as DS into a fairly small screen.

Even on my iPod I find it awkward trying to navigate through the quick reply box - for some reason, there isn't a scroll bar on the right hand side which should be there, so I have to keep hitting enter at the end of lines and backspace back, to try and get the rest of the post to appear on screen (if that makes sense?), if I want to post. I'm thinking if I try and post using that again, I'd be better going to the advanced post screen, if that works.

People still have desktops at home? How 20th century. Laptops are boring tools. Phones are much more innovative and interesting.

Yes, people still have desktops at home. Not sure why I would want to sit at home looking at a small phone screen all the time when I can sit comfortablly looking at a hi-res 22" screen.

What exactly can a phone do that a PC can't that makes it so innovative?

22"? thats bigger than my TV lol sounds good

I also wonder the answer to your question - I presume its more to do with the portability of phones that others prefer?.

I wouldn't say being portable is innovative though as you have had portable computers for many years now.

I agree, im just guessing why people may say they prefer to use smartphones. It must lead to headaches and sore fingers to use them for a prolonged time though, at least ones with fairly small screens and keypads, surely?.

Personally I wouldn't want to use a smartphone for a long period of time. They are great for when out and about though.

But at home I'd much rather use my desktop PC or Tablet. I even find mt 7" Tablet a little small now and am considering a larger screened one.

I love my smartphone and use it a lot to browse the net and play games when out and about or even in bed or in the toilet, but it would never replace either of my Macbooks. There's no way I'd be able to do university work on my phone. I can't imagine typing a 5000 word essay on it. The screen is also too small for any prolonged browsing session. It's fine when I need to look at something quick or when out and about though.
