I read it the other way round. Derek's here for some BBC Worldwide franchise thing - could be anything, anywhere - and the only thing about him that interests the Daily Mail is his relationship with CC, so that's what they ask him about and "report" on.

First of all, loving how this has turned into an article about Derek's meeting with the BBC into "DEREK OWNS DWTS!" bashing thread. It's utter nonsense. The only absolute ringah Derek has had is Nicole, and she asked for him based on the futuristic Paso he had with Joanna. Also bear in mind that it was only from season 10 with Nicole Derek had the lions share of contestants, before that only Brooke had got him to the finals. After that, Jennifer and Ricki were hardly the favourites from the off, the former for her injuries it must be noted. Maria was rubbish and Kellie, as much as she deserved her win, was hardly the runaway winner with Zendaya next to her, and even Aly.

BIB - I've never heard of it being connected with the BBC in any way. Only ever heard of STARZ (US cable channel) mentioned, so I'd think you're right about that. I wouldn't imagine his visit had anything to do with SCD - DS are just fantasising

A celeb doesn't have to be a runaway winner or absolute ringer to be a ringer - the producers can have more than one ringer in each series.
And saying Derek gets ringers or good celebs is no more 'utter nonsense' than trying to deny he does.
By the way Maria was hardly 'rubbish' - she may not have been brilliant but given the right dance she was a decent mover and she had the advantage of being a very attractive, popular woman - she got to the semis, I think most pros would be happy to have a chance to dance with someone like her.

Not denying he has good celebs, I'm saying speculation he demands them or would only do the show if the producers give them to him is "utter nonsense". However, As I say, it's only in the very recent series he's had this. As I say, before Nicole, whilst most of his partners were never likely to be the first ones to leave, by equal measure, the likes of Joanna Krupa and Shannon Elizabeth were never going to get their hands on the mirrorball trophy without a short miracle.

Well I never said Maria was winning material but having said that Chris Hollins anyone.....
I don't think he'd give DWTS the time of day if he wasn't given good celebs that would have a greater chance to get him to the latter stages and I don't think it's 'utter nonsense' to speculate about it.

Whilst I don't think he'll get another Kellie/Zendaya type for a while, I can still see him getting a middle of the road type dancer this series (I can't really give an example this series as they were either useless like Wynonna and Lisa, or made the finals, Aly/Zen/Kellie) but the female equivalent of Sean Lowe, someone who has some residual popularity and can move, but not great and never going to win. What the producers will want is to get the best from their pros, namely allowing Derek to show off his choreography which makes the show so watchable, but without winning it and it being the shows perpetual winner.
And whilst it's speculation to say Derek may have quit before now if he wasn't given these celebs, it's another thing entirely to say he's holding ABC to ransom over it!

Sort of how I started my post bemoaning the fact the Zendaya lot have basically migrated with a large axe to grind and demanding to be heard
But yes- anyway, Hough not on Strictly, maybe a judge or one off performance (like Lacey last year in the opener)

I can't help think that those claiming Derek gets an unfair advantage are doing him a massive disservice. Its rare that he gets the person who you instantly think they will be the winner but what he is good at doing is maximising the potential of the celeb he does get. All too often the other pros seem to let their celeb off easy even if they are highly capable, they don't push them in difficulty and in the amount of content. Look at Val this past season Zendaya clearly had the most natural dance talent but Val just didn't push her enough hence why throughout the season every dance was littered with Hip-Hop versions of the moves, I feel Derek wouldn't have let her get away with that and would have had the hip-hop feel knocked out of her (unless the dance called for it)
The producers do help him by ensuring he gets celebs who generally have the right work ethic but certainly don't give him the best person each time. It makes sense for all the SCD based shows to match the pros/celebs up to be as compatible as possible because the last thing you want is Celebs quitting and some pros like Anton on SCD suit the worst celebs who are likely to have a lower work ethic as their personality and style suits such a person where Derek's style most likely wouldn't

I've been watching DWTS since season 4 and he is clearly given an adavantage over the other pros. It helps that Derek is obviously the judges favourite and a lot of his dances get overmarked IMO.

Bib neither does Val or Mark or Maks tbh yes Mark had a couple Kym and Bristol come to mind but I think Kym could have been good if she had any kind of work ethnic and Bristol had a Huge fanbase Only one I can think of for Maks is Kirstie who yet again had a huge fanbase. Those type of celeb usually goes to Tony or Tristan.
Agree that Derek doesn't get enough credit for being a good teacher and agree that every DWTS topic is turning into this debate which is :sleep:
As for bbc/Blackpool thing Starz has worked with bbc before on series including torchwwod & they may be just looking for a channel in uk to show it coupling it with strictly would make sense tbh
Derek also said that Julianne is looking to get back to dancing but not going back to DWTS

I usually try to avoid these types of arguments, but can't let this one slide. Derek got ripped a number of times for things other couples did without consequence. For instance, Len ripped him a new one for including "the frippery" of a cow in his and Shawn Johnson's Cha Cha during Country Week, even as he called the choreography fantastic and the movement brilliant. The cow was just background decoration. Yet Len said nothing about the elaborate campground complete with campfire and trees Tony and Melissa had for their Viennese Waltz minutes later and gave them a standing ovation!
Talk about frippery, the week All Star celebrities were in charge of choreography, Kirstie and Maks wasted the first 22 seconds--literally, the music started at 3:01 and the dancing didn't start until 3:23--Maks drove on the set in a CAR and Kirstie was part of a crowd of 'groupies'--yet Len said he wanted celebrities to be in charge of choreography EVERY week and gave them the SAME score he gave Shawn and Derek's Quickstep, which was packed with content from the opening bar and of which Len said he had never enjoyed a routine more, that it was fantastic. Who got the favoritism there? Looks to me like Kirstie Alley did. Who else could get away with 22 wasted seconds of 'frippery?'
There IS no consistent standard. Jason Taylor stumbled twice in his Waltz and got two 10s! Len openly preferred Evan Lysacek in Season 10 and expressed surprise Evan trailed the other two finalists the first night of the finals. Len has often been harder on good dancers such as Mya and Nicole, UNDERscoring them for whatever reason.
After Kellie/Derek/Tristan's trio paso, TIME magazine called out Len for an "epic tantrum" that caused Tom Bergeron to say, "I don't know you." Btw Len complained Derek didn't do a certain move that Derek said he DID include. So Len may have been WRONG to boot! But to complain about flashing lights?! Huh?! What's wrong with him?
As much as I like Len and don't want him going anywhere, I'm mystified how Len can keep slamming dancers, such as Damien Whitewood and Pam Anderson, for using sets that clearly the producers want for theme nights, to increase RATINGS. He sometimes acts like he thinks he's in a random ballroom somewhere judging on PBS. There's a good reason PBS-style ballroom shows aren't on prime time.
As far as getting to showcase his dancing or choreography on results shows, Derek has said the producers are open to suggestions from ANY pros (although the blind girl asked for him). Val and Mark did "Toxic Duel" dancing and playing instruments. Anna and Jonathan did a Waltz. Val got SEVEN pro dances during Season 13 to Derek's ZERO.
IMO Derek has earned whatever favoritism he now enjoys. He didn't have it his first few seasons, then celebs started asking for him. He thought Ricki Lake achieved above and beyond what anyone, including him, expected of her. Ricki was in the lead the first night of finals and, guess what, relegated to 3rd place due to the voting. That's the way the show works, but I bet if any of your favorites had the same success none of you would mind a bit.
P.S. For all the talk about Strictly, a few years ago when The Sun claimed Derek was in talks with BBC bosses for an exclusive contract, Derek said he had never been contacted by ANYBODY from the show. How these rumors get started is a mystery.
This is funny. Derek is starting a show that may or may not make it on a cable network in the US. The previous attempts he's made into acting on shows in the US haven't gone over so well. He's tried to be a TV host even that was a bust. Where is the big movie he made in China that was coming to America? As for as the dancing, he's got injuries and needs surgery. DWTS has given him the most capable partners, the best songs to dance to and the prime time spots usually he's last for dancing. As to choreography: The very first DWTS show I saw on TV was a rerun of the Season 2 finals. I stood up in disbelief during Stacy Keibler and Tony Dovolani's freestyle and exclaimed: "They're not doing anything! That's first-lesson beginner stuff!" All three judges agreed, saying Stacy was the best dancer all season and they expected so much more. Judges scored it 8, 9, 9, when both Stacy's other dances in the finals got perfect 30s. Maks' freestyle for Laila Ali two seasons later wasn't much better, scoring 9, 8, 9. Her other two dances in the finals totaled 59 out of 60 so Laila could easily have come in second place rather than third had Maks let her shine in the freestyle. She was bitter, too, because she thought she deserved to win.
Not only is Derek's dancing easily the equal of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, as Show business critcs at top newspapers have been saying for years, but I venture to say neither could top his choreography. He received three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Choreography. Derek was far from a bust in his hosting gigs or he wouldn't have been asked back again and again (Kelly Ripa and others) or invited to be a featured host periodically on several other shows. Hosting wouldn't have fulfilled his creative, music and acting dreams anyway, that was just a fun extra to do.
He didn't make any movie in China, what are you talking about? He shot a movie in New York City and Canada that is scheduled for release later this year. The main audience for the movie isn't the US but Asia, where his co-star, BOA, is the Queen of Korean Pop. Independent movies don't have big promotion budgets anyway, so I'm not expecting anything from it.
And who said Blackpool 'may or may not' make it on a cable network in the US? Starz announced they inked the deal and filming is already underway. But why be positive when you can be uber-negative, glass-half-empty?
Derek did very well in the small acting part he had on another ABC show, Better With You. Acting's not new to him, he's a very good actor. He had to turn down an earlier, meatier role because of a schedule conflict and could not accept numerous offers for interesting parts on other network shows because BBC and ABC exercised their contractual right not to allow it.
His physician said he may not need surgery if he continues to ice as needed.
Your statement the producers always give him the best songs to dance to is patently false. Jason Taylor, Kim Kardashian and Bristol Palin all said producers worked with them to give them songs they wanted and approved, songs tailored just to them.
Lacey Schwimmer once said she got almost every song she asked for! I was shocked to read the abomination Alec Mazo and Toni Braxton danced the Viennese Waltz to, classical spliced with electronic cacophony, was Alec's idea! Makeup trailer footage in this video from Season 8 shows a music producer playing a song on his laptop for Cheryl Burke's approval as they couldn't get the song she requested. Derek has gotten songs he was not thrilled to have. Sometimes he has sucked it up (his Jive with Nicole to Rohanna's SOS when Nicole was looking forward to doing a traditional Jive). Other times he worked with Orchestra Director Harold Wheeler to make the music fit the dance better. They added a Latin beat for Nicole's Pretty Woman tango, and Maria said Derek added strings for their Rumba the morning of the performance. Derek said he'll call Harold Wheeler and say, "I want an accent on the third beat of the fifth bar." He had Kellie's freestyle music chopped up the way he wanted. All pros could do the same if they wanted.
In Maria's season he didn't like their initial Paso or Cha Cha songs so he requested a change, which ALL pros are entitled to do. Psycho music for a tango? Seriously? Derek didn't ask for that, but he made the best of it. By now they know he can handle unusual choices, but that's far from saying he gets the best music.
