strange one that...............it was a real standard foodstuff in the 50s and 60s when i was a kid

Sandwiches..............salmon paste, fish paste, meat paste etc...........those little jars that you had to prise the top off with a coin...........

Every now and then i have a craving for them and make sandwiches with sliced cucumber and a selection of pastes

chicken paste is nice.............but god knows what's in it.............

I crave it now and then. There must be nutrients in it that are not available in any other food source. Mostly it's the chicken one I'll have but now and again I'll have the salmon one. It is the only form of salmon I like.

We always have a couple of jars in as a standby for sandwiches. It's not bad. Sardine and tomato is nice on crackers for supper sometimes.

Every so often I'll have a hankering for a truly dirty sandwich of white bread, lots of butter and some beef paste.

Like some others, I too keep a couple of jars in my cupboard. My apocalypse cupboard as my other half calls it. The jars of meat paste are kept company by blocks of 11p value noodles, tins of peas, corn, beans etc All of which would see me through the trauma of a post WW3 existence. Probably.

I like the Shiphams Beef one, in a crusty white roll. I used to have the salmon one when I was a kid but can't eat it now.

I got a taste for one maybe 5 years ago, maybe more.............but I haven't seen it lately

It came in a bit of a bigger jar and had 'Yorkshire' in the name - it was a beef paste

The only sandwich I would have for every day of my school years was beef paste and cucumber with no butter. I ate them every single lunchtime. Recently I thought i'd try one again after 35 years. Not good...

well that was a load of rubbish..............

I've been to Sainsbury this morning and they didn't have any Shippams, only their own brand and only 2 varieties, Chicken and Sardine and Tomato

I was expecting a whole shelf full of dozens of little jars of different colours and flavours

I'll have to try Tesco................

Never! Well I'm veggie - but a friend of mine used to take bloater paste sandwiches to school & a flask of luke warm tomato soup, it took me years to enjoy Tom soup again!

I did try one 20 years ago, vile stuff. I did wonder who still bought those horrid looking pastes. It looks like many of you have answered that question!

I love/d sardine and tomato by Shippams - used to make kids party sandwiches with this or marmite.

It's *Shippam's* paste.

Shipman's paste sounds like it contains puréed OAP.

My old man used to go through tons of paste. Back when Shippam's was the only paste there was. Interestingly, I've just looked on mySupermarket and it's now called Shippam's 'spread'. Wonder when they changed it? I have to say, spread sounds more appealing than 'paste'. Never liked the term paste tbh.

Anyway, I love the stuff but the jars are so small! I like opening them and hearing the 'pop' of the lid as the vacuum is broken. Love it on toast with plenty of butter or these days I use the olive oil spread from Lidl which is quite nice.
