iPhone 5 MMS problems
Glasgow Girl
12-06-2013
I am having a problem with sending picture messages on my iPhone 5. I can send picture messages between 2 iPhones but not between my iPhone and any other make of phone. I've been onto O2 (my provider) and into my local O2 shop so many times I feel like I am now friends with the sales assistants there and no-one seems to be able to fix it. Their answer is to check the MMS settings, which have been proven to be correct and they say that because their computer shows the MMS settings as being active, it's not a problem on their side, but by the same token because I can send MMS messages to another iPhone, the problem doesn't seem to be from my phone either. Their new suggestion today is to try a replacement SIM card.

Has anyone else had the same problem and, if so, how did you get yours solved?

Thanks.

First of all, you'll need to establish if the messages going to other iPhones are actually MMS, or whether you're using iMessage. If you can send pictures to other iPhones but not to any other type of phone, it seems likely that you're using iMessage to do that.

You can go to Settings > Messages and temporarily turn iMessage off to see if you can then continue to send picture messages to other iPhones.

I'm sure you've already done this, but in the same menu, scroll down and check that MMS Messaging is switched on.

I suspect it is going through iMessage. When I turned it off, the messaging didn't work. I do have the MMS Messaging switched on.

Okay, so now we know that you can't send MMS messages at all. Forget the bit about being able to send to other iPhones. iMessage works in a different way and doesn't use your network provider's service, and that's why you're able to send them. (Even when you get MMS working, you should continue to use iMessage whenever you can, because you won't incur network charges for iMessages.)

This sounds like a problem with O2. Have you tried resetting your network settings? This can be done in Settings > General > Reset > Network Settings. You won't lose any data, but your phone might forget stored wifi passwords.

I've re-set the whole phone on 3 separate occasions now and am still having the same problem. You are right in that my wi-fi passwords etc had to be re-set (least of my worries). O2 say the problem isn't with them. We've checked the network settings - they've sent me them on many occasions - and they are correct.

They are now stating that it could be a faulty SIM. Could that be right?

Thanks for your help so far.

It's definitely worth a try with a new SIM.

If you can access data on the phone and send pictures using iMessage, it doesn't sound like a problem with the phone itself.

Well put in my new SIM and the same problem is happening. Went back on to O2 and must have got a customer service guy having a bad day. He has completely washed his hands of the whole thing and said it must be the handset. I told him that the problem only started when I updated the software and that I hadn't had this problem before but still he wasn't having it, so I've made an appointment with Apple, as thankfully I have an Apple store near me. They don't think the problem is them but they couldn't have been more helpful and they say if it is the phone, then they'll replace it straight away.

Thanks for all your help IslandNiles (and I love the name by the way!!!).

I think it's a known bug. My mum, dad, partner and myself can only send mms to each other using iMessage. Can't send it to anyone else not using iMessage. A few weeks ago we could send mms by switching I messaging off and sending the mms then switching it back on. This solution has now stopped working. The Vodafone rep I spoke to said they are waiting for a fix.

I have spent 30 mts on the phone to O2 who have advised that it would appear that the messages are never leaving the handset but my problem is that I got a deep factory reset at the Apple Store near me last night and two messages sent fine. It was only when I tried to send a third message this morning that it didn't work. Looks like a wee trip back to Apple today

It's a pain int it! My fella works for O2 and had took a few calls about this issue but not for a few weeks. He thought it had been resolved until he tried to send a pic! He is going to chat to someone at work today
