Is there a difference between irish whisky and other types?
I hate the taste but I just saw http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ho...sh_cream_18863 and I want to make it at some point for Christmas presents.

It's spelled differently for a start. Scotch whisky, but Irish whiskey.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_whiskey has some info, saying it's distilled three times where Scotch is distilled twice, and rarely uses peat in the malting process, so generally tastes smoother than Scotch.

Ok, thank you for that.
Could I substitute Scotch for the recipe do you think?

Looking at the recipe there are so many other flavours (coffee, chocolate, vanilla, almond) that the whisky may get overpowered anyway. So you could probably risk it!

I've had a go at these sort of recipes before and they work fine with scotch. Oddly, to my mind, the most important ingredient is the coffee - it tastes very 'flat' if you leave that out.

Irish whiskey to me tastes a lot less strong. It has a sweeter, milder taste. More of a peat flavour than smoky, woody flavours. Scotch tastes heavy to me. Although as I live in Ireland perhaps i'm just more used to Irish whiskey and it seems easier to drink.
