Semi-automatically on the iPhone. You have to open the app to start the upload, and then if you exit the app it'll only continue to upload photos for a short time before pausing it. At this point you get a notification to tell you that it's been paused, and you can go back into the app to resume it. (This will probably change with iOS 7, when proper multitasking is enabled for third party apps.)

Completely automated on Android, I think.

Also worth remembering that whilst iCloud is a good backup option (frequent and automated) it's only useful if you want/need to restore your entire phone. You can't pick and choose bits from the backup to restore, so it's not useful if you accidentally delete a photo and want to restore it.

It doesn't seem very well known that Photo Stream works really well for PC. I get all my pictures from my iPhone on my PC without doing anything manually. But again, some restrictions - it doesn't do video at present.

Dropbox is a good solution.

I also found that Dropbox asked me if I wanted to automatically upload the photos when I connected the phone to the PC for syncing, so I thought "Why Not?" and enabled the option.

Since I've got the Dropbox client installed on my PC as well, the "Camera Uploads" folder appears to work in pretty much the same way as the Photo Stream.

Yeah, it does. I seem to remember reading that it uses image compression though.

Interesting. The test picture i've just taken has immediately uploaded to my Dropbox folder - nothing in the Photo Stream yet.

I'll compare the two when it appears in the Photo Stream

DropBox?
It doesn't.

Seems like the issue is, or at least was, the other way round. Pictures compressed when saved to the camera roll from Dropbox, even after the update.

EDIT: Also meant to mention earlier that Photo Stream only updates when you're on wifi, too.

Interesting. Reading that link, someone says that all the cloud services downsize, but that Dropbox actually does it the least.

I only use Dropbox. Seems to be the best cloud storage.

Dropbox as the main one but Google Drive also has some nice features especially when it comes to editing files over the web.

It's free for 2 years.

HTC offer 25GB free for one year if memory serves and, now that I think about it, I also have 50GB of free Box storage for life courtesy of what was then Sony Ericsson.
So really, whatever you were to upgrade to from a Samsung, you'd get some amount of free storage.

I might have to try Zoolz - I've got an invite for it (if it's still active i suppose) and it's 100gb per person apparently. There's an app for it, so i'd assume the functionality is similar to dropbox and the like.

I use both. icloud is essential for mirror backups of your idevice. Its easy and very handy.

Yeah. As I said earlier, you can just drop the camera roll part of the backup if you want to. I'm probably going to do this at some point.
