A photo showing the PS4 next to some cans of beer.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BMtBqo2CQAEGf41.jpg:large

Not the big tall cans obviously! 12 fl oz is 354ml, so a bit bigger than a can of coke (330ml) or whatever - don't think we have small beer cans here, maybe we do, I don't drink!

Looks quite small.

Can I be ridiculously nerdy and point out that the blurred game behind the water bottle appears to be The Last of Us?

You could tell when Andrew house at the Sony presser was holding it that it was small.

I also thought the X1 was massive but then seen it next to the new "one" designed 360 and it isn't that much bigger either. Though much less pretty.

It is that size.

You only have to look at pictures around the internet or videos to see how small it is.

I can one up your nerdom by identifying the photo as being from the giant bomb e3 after hours live stream.

I like a good sized console, I'm not sure what the fixation is with making it small? It's why I loved the original PS3 model as it was big but looked lovely in a set up.

But you love the Xbox 360 S?

Seriously just admit you're anti-Sony and be done with it, you're even picking on its size now.

Well it's smaller than the normal Xbox 360, OK, well how about this, GameCube, Wii, etc, all pretty small consoles, I don't recall you having any problems with those.

I don't dislike small consoles either, the Wii for instance... one of my favourite consoles of all time..

It's just I don't understand the fixation with it, or to be a little more specific; the negative connotations of one being bigger that the other, how does it matter?

I hope they've taken into consideration any over heating problems.

I kinda sort of agree with you...which is weird

The size of the console doesn't matter

But when it comes to having a ****ing massive brick or the slimmer PS4 there is no argument to be had the PS4 looks better
whether you prefer the games on PS4 or Xbox one, the PS4 looks better
whether you prefer the features of the PS3 or Xbox one, the PS4 looks better
But like i said at the start its not like the looks of the machine matter, just what the machines and better at and what they restrict you from doing

I would like to see a tear down to see what they did with the airflow. Remember ps3 had heating problems too. That could be one reason MS went big - make damn sure there is enough cooling this time around without just packing it with noisy fans. I would take big and silent over small and noisy.

Microsoft would never allow that. Xbox Ones are only allowed to be photographed next to bottles of Mountain Dew.

TBH I'm abit confused ... both the PS4 & X1 have identical tech so why is the X1 5X bigger then the PS4??

(The PS4 is tiny almost the same size as the wii lol)

(& Kinect looks the size of an after8s box)

Kinect looks bigger than a box of After Eights to me! Deeper.

The PS4 is quite deep, deeper than the Xbox One.

Overall the Xbox One is I forget the exact figure now but it was something like 62% larger volume than the PS4 AND has external power supply.

I think that is down to the fan, they have an absolutely huge fan which is what gives it the height.

I think it's an aesthetic choice as much as it is about cooling. Making consoles look small is very much the "Japanese way" of efficiency and cost-cutting, Microsoft really are not pandering to that market anymore and I don't blame them. If you look at Western developed Hi-Fi components we don't make them small, even though they could be made that way, it's just not as pleasing to the eye.

PS4 design does surprise me though, it looks like a second revision out of the gate like one of their slimline models. It looks cheap because of it too.

Why are you comparing to hi-fis.

With hi-fis people have a pre-conception that big speaker = bigger/better sound so they often come with oversized speakers and then they'll make the hi-fi to that same height for uniformity.

Small is better for a console because it has to go under the TV, where space may be limited if you're someone who has a TV set top box, a DVD player, a surround sound receiver, another console or whatever you've got going on under there.

The Xbox One cannot be made smaller. The fan causes the height of the console and they have included that fan as they want a near-silent operation.

It's grown on me the more I've seen it, at first I didn't like it much at all. But it looks great in the stand, I'm picturing it on my desk now and I think it will look perfect. It's roughly the size of a ps3 slim right? I just watched the Giantbomb video and it looks much better than any official photo's I have seen, and I like matte black, it's got a good combo I think.
