last Tuesday he started retching a lot and bringing up phlegm, i rushed him to the vet and he had to have an operation to remove a large grass seed that had become embedded into the soft tissue where the nasal passages join the throat. It was really difficult for them to remove it and took ages. They also took out 3 rotten teeth while he was under the anaesthetic.

He is 15 yrs old and isn't recovering very well. I was able to bring him home on Tuesday evening and he went for a check up the next day but it was a rather uncaring vet who attempted to look in his mouth but Tigger wasnt cooperating so he gave up. He said he should be fine now but will be sore for a while.

He usually only eats dried cat food but as he is sore they suggested i try him on wet food. The day after the operation he ate a fair bit of whiskas in jelly but since then is not really eating anything and i have tried him on all sorts.

He is still dribbling bloodstained drool which they said was normal for the first day but i am not sure he should still be doing it.

They gave me liquid pain killing medicine for him but as he is not eating he is not getting any of it (its meant to go in his food) and i cannot get in into him directly, he gets very distressed and wont let me.

My son is in the middle of exams at uni so i have not told him because he will fall apart. He is due home this coming Friday and i am praying Tigger is still with us then.

Can everyone please and positive vibes for Tigger, he is the softest most loving old ginger cat in the world.

so sorry to hear that. You could try some cheese to get him going, nearly all cats like that! Also get some smelly fish such as tuna or salmon to try and tempt him with

I had a thread not so long ago where I was asking for food suggestions, take a look, there were some good ones on there

Sorry to hear about Tigger.

Have you tried giving him some tinned tuna or chicken? It would help to get some of the painkiller inside him too.

Thanks for the replies. Yup i have tried him on tuna, pilchards, mackerel and chicken, he just won't eat it. I will have a look for that topic thanks bazaar

Take him back to the vet for a pain killing injection +/- antibiotics.

He has to eat something. Cats cannot starve for longer than 24 hours.

Yes milk maybe, only other thing i can suggest would be small prawns. The smallest, cheapest ones you get at Sainsburys etc should do the trick hopefully. Best of luck.

I'll repeat the suggestion I made in the other thread - try baby food. It worked for my cat, (who is also called Tigger), when I couldn't get him to eat anything else. Also, anything you give him, blast it in the microwave for about 10 seconds first. It brings the smell out and makes it more appetising to the cat.

You can get food from the vets which is realy soft . It helps convelessing. Animals after operations

Use a syringe to get the medicine into him, if you can't get it in take him to vets for an injection or to stay for a few days and get a line in.

You need to get some calo pet if your cat isn't eating. A teaspoonful per day provides complete nutrition for the cat post surgery. Put some on your finger and stick it in the cats mouth.

You need to be strong and get stuck in. Softly, softly will end up with a dead cat and there's plenty you can do that doesn't require positive vibes.

Go back to your practice and ask to see a different vet.

Thanks so much for the advice everyone, it is much appreciated. I did take him back and he got an anti inflammatory injection and since lunch time today he has picked up a little bit and has eaten a little, not much but at least it was something. Bless him, after all the various foods i have tried him on, the thing he has finally eaten a bit of is his dried crunchy Go Cat which i thought would be the last thing he would want!

So, he isn't out of the woods yet but things are looking better than they were, thanks so much again for the support xx

he is still improving thank goodness, i really did think this was the end of the line for him but today he has gone for several strolls around the garden and has eaten a bit more, i am so so so relieved!

Thanks yet again everyone, it really has helped knowing that there are strangers out there rooting for him xxx

Glad he's doing well. I thought it was the end for y, cat when I posted my first thread, but she had a few more months which meant the world.

One tip we have is heinz tinned macaroni cheese, she loved it and when we mentioned ito the vet he said alot of cats do! It's a good appetite booster.

He is not so good again, hasn't eaten since yesterday. I am meant to be getting my son from uni tomorrow but its going to be about 6 hours round trip and i dont want to leave Tigger on his own for that long. I might see if i can get someone to sit with him later today and try and get him home tonight.

Aww, poor Tigger. Might be worth phoning the vet for any advice they can give over the phone.

I am taking him back to the vets this aft, 3.50pm is the earliest they can see him. I feel cruel, he is terrified of the car and the vet but maybe he has an infection where they operated and needs antibiotics? God i hope so, my son is in bits now and packing up.

I always felt a meanie when I took my cat to the vets - she used to bury her head in my belly when she was on the table!

You're doing it for the right reasons though, it's just a shame we can't explain that to our pets.

Fingers crossed for Tigger, let us know how it goes.

Thanks again everyone.

The vet couldn't see any particular reason for him going down hill and no obvious signs of infection but decided to cover all options so she gave him an antibiotic shot and a pain killing shot. About an hour later he ate a little tuna then settled down so i set off about 5.30 to get my son from Warwick uni (we are in west yorks).

We got back around 11pm, tigger was very lethargic so we used an oral syringe and got quite a lot of water down him, bit by bit over an hour or so and he really perked up, got up, had a little wander in the garden and ate some tuna!!

I took him up to bed with me and put a bowl of water in my bedroom and he drank quite a lot overnight and this morning he has eaten a fair amount of tuna!!

So, yet again, fingers crossed that he has properly turned the corner this time, I am so glad we got my son home last night because i wouldn't have been able to do the oral syringe feeding on my own and that really did seem to have a dramatic effect. My son is so so so relieved to be home with him!

I will keep updating this topic, thanks again for all the support
