So as it's been a weekend now maybe it's time to openly talk about the story of the Last of Us and it has been suggested by Thomas2400 that a spoiler allowed thread be opened so I thought I'd start this. So if you are reading this having forgone the warning in the thread title and have not finished the story yet, this is not for you. This thread will have spoilers. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

So the story. I liked the story, I thought it was really well thought out and well written. At first it felt like every time I got to somewhere it was saying "Nope not here, go over there instead" *pointing at a landmark in the distance that is a different colour to the rest of the city* But I liked the mix up when you start playing as Ellie and I loved the shock of Joel getting hurt so bad, I didn't expect that.

The ending was good too, I liked how Joel lied to Ellie just so she was safe. It was sweet and a clear indication that he saw her as his daughter. I didn't want to save the world, I can do that in hundreds of other games so to just do what the protagonist wanted was quite nice.

What are other peoples thoughts then?

Playing this game reminded me of bits from this survival horror book - particularly chapter 5 - Ellie is a lot like Julia Venison in this I'd say...

http://amzn.to/YG0jfy

I was making good progress but got hit with the auto save bug - almost back up from loosing 2-3 hours of gameplay lol

Thanks for the mention

I loved it, at first i thought it was going to be a by the numbers game when at the start you just followed Tommy in the prologue and then you followed Tess for a while

On friday i played up until the graveyard with Billy, then unusually for a naughty dog game i have no major urge to carry on so i played a Zelda and just ignored the game

Yesterday i decided to give a go and carry on and see if i could see the 10/10 it was getting and boy is this game great when it let's you handle everything, trying to sneak past clickers only to be attacked by runners you didn't know about, making a shiv on the fly hoping the clicker in front of you doesn't turn around

The story is fantastic, from the early losses of Sarah and Tess, the not knowing whether billy is crazy when you are traveling with him, meeting sam and henry and what happens to them (and i noticed she stole the toy before we left the shop ) finding where is Tommy and how he is, the wonderfully handled sub plot with David in the small town and the final journey to the hospital, every aspect was perfect

I'm wouldn't rate it out of 10 just yet i want to see how tedious the multiplayer becomes first

You're welcome

I found the multiplayer very boring to be honest; it just seemed like a COD rip off with nothing new to it. I'm not that interested in multiplayer anyway.

I loved wandering around with a shiv or a big axe ready to take on anything that ran at me. I also liked how I picked up new weapons all of the way through the game and got an assault rifle right at the end, not that I used it though. I really struggled with the hospital bits and ended up throwing smoke bombs and running for it.

With regards to the multiplayer i would of liked it more had they not forced it on people like me who want the platinum

Essentially its a stealth game online and its about gathering parts and making items to try and kill people without getting in a firefight, if people run in like John Rambo in the CoD style the team will lose, in fact running of any kind makes you show up on the radar

the thing that annoy me though is the 12 weeks thing multiplayer, it means you have to do at least 84 games per group for a total of 168 games

but say you **** up a challenge during week 12 and you have already done 80 games, well that's to bad game over start again from match one

also its broken as hell, i've met the requirements for two trophies and they haven't popped

Wow that sounds complicated. I only played one game and the rest of my team ran in gung ho and got slaughtered. I also just kept getting shot in the back so I just turned it off. I never have the patience for team based multiplayer anyway. I always just want to shoot my team matesfor being idiots lol. It is annoying that trophies are multiplayer based too but I can't see myself going for platinum on htis one anyway. I don't fancy replaying it anyway never mind on Survivor mode lol

I wasnt expecting Joel to be impaled like that, and then Ellie telling him to move when he is clearly losing blood and dying! The start of Winter with the rabbit coming up before being killed looked amazing and made me think of PS4!

I encountered a few glitches including one where Ellie is strangling herself although i killed all the enemys? And in the resteraunt the game glitched with david constantly saying Hello Ellie which was kinda creepy! I think the ending should have been that they both don't make it out the hospital and they die so that its a conclusive ending and no sequal or DLC which it looks like it will be getting at some point.

Well I made my feelings about the ending pretty clear but I'm on my phone so could someone be a dear and copy and paste my post from the other thread. It'd be much appreciated.

Dandem's opinion:

And I'm beginning to think that it's actually a brilliant ending. I was quite taken aback I reckon by the fact that it wasn't a 'happy' ending, which I've come to.think of as the norm. And those that complain will probably be those who wanted a happy ending. I did think that I was expecting an ending which would have seen humanity saved whilst keeping Ellie alive, which wouldn't have been great thinking about it.

The ending we got I feel suited the game. It wad more apt. We were on an emotional rollercoaster throughout. We've seen the relationship between Joel and Ellie build to a point where Joel has refused the chance to save humanity in order to keep one girl alive AGAINST HER WILL. That is actually quite heartbreaking. The imagery as we see Joel carry Ellie out of the surgery mirroring him carrying Sarah in the prologue is tragic. Joel has replaced Sarah with Ellie. And to lie to Ellie amplifies this reality. Joel has always been selfish, seen when he refused to help people on the highway in the prologue. It's always been about survival. And now the trust that was so strong between Joel and Ellie is broken as Joel is unable to deal with losing his daughter again. It's a heartbreaking finale but it makes complete sense.

I personally think Naughty Dog have done it brilliantly. I just hope they don't feel the need to do a sequel. It doesn't need one.

Will people complain about the ending like mass effect 3 and they'll save to go back and make a happy one??

No problem

And no I think that most people will like this ending but there is DLC planned (I know this as game tried to sell me a season pass for the 3 DLC packs that will be released) so they probably have something planned anyway.

Have they said what the season pass fully contains, i'm finally come around to the idea of buying DLC for games

If its single player campaigns i'd expect it to show stuff from the game with didn't see, Tommy meeting his wife or Billy hanging out with frank(?) perhaps

Not a clue to be honest I just thought it was pathetic that they were trying to sell me something else for 16 pound after I was already spending 43 on the game so I wasn't really listening to her.

I loved the ending, but I wondered if they could have made it a choice, because I wonder if some people might have chosen differently. When Joel was driving away after Marlene stopped him, I genuinely thought for a moment that he'd left Ellie! Thank God he didn't! Like KillerCloud summarised, Ellie eventually replaced Sarah and I don't think there was any chance Joel was going to let himself lose her, epitomised by his ruthlessness at the hospital.

On that point, I found it interesting when you break into the operating room and the doctor confronts you with a scalpel. I didn't even really think about it, but I gunned down all 3 surgeons even though two of them were cowering in the corner!

One part I really loved was the giraffe scene. How beautiful was that!

Beautiful yes, random very much so! I found the story a bit rubbish just moving from one location to the next with the odd set piece thrown in. Doubt i'll replay it, preferred the Uncharted games.

I bashed the brains of all of them in without even stopping to think if it was necessary in order to proceed, I guess I got really into that scene

I also agree about the giraffe scene, it was staged perfectly for a surprisingly touching reveal.

The ending to The Last Of us leaves it open to a sequel, I was thinking that in TLoU2 - set maybe 5 years later, Joel could die early in the next game, killed by the infected, then Ellie could become the main character.

Her adventure could be to find a cure once and for all, but on her travels she learns the truth about what Joel had kept from her - that he took her from the hospital and killed the fireflies that could have saved humanity.

As a consequence of this, she becomes determined to fulfil her destiny by sacrificing herself to save mankind.

Very sad ending but that's life sometimes.

Just a thought

I don't know if it was deliberate or not by Naughty Dog but I love the comparison between Joel and Nathan Drake. People always say with a nudge and a wink that Drake is an unremorseful, mass murdering lunatic, and maybe he's the real "bad guy", and Joel is that concept played out fully.

The Giraffe scene was beautifully done I stopped playing for 2 mins just to look at the view you had amazing.

I liked the ending to i thought it summed up the game well and showed that Joel is selfish but also doing whats good for him and Ellie. But i think if Ellie finds out 'TLOU2' she will go ape ****

I also went in guns blazing i shot most of them but i noticed one was down in the corner when i had Ellie in my arms lucky bugger

Im always intrigued if a cure this late into an outbreak is worth it i mean can you really save the planet after 20 years ? But i suppose it prevents future outbreaks.

A few emotional parts of the game, other than the prologue, were when Henry killed himself after Sam's death, when Ellie got saved from Joel from getting raped, the giraffes & when Joel carried Ellie off the operating table.

Lots of unexpected moments in the game, especially when Joel got impaled.

Not sure if I should try multiplayer as I don't usually get on with third person games online, or keep the online pass unused so when I sell it on, I may get a bit more for it.

Going to play another play through but don't know if I should do a normal+ or go onto a harder setting?

Only got 3 tropies the full game. Completing on normal & easy and one for crafting each item

So...

I bloody *loved* it. Graphics, sound, gameplay, characters, story, dialogue, voice acting... Utterly brilliant. A gaming masterpiece.

It's stuck a shiv in the face of BioShock Infinite and taken the top spot as my current GOTY. I doubt that it will be beaten.

The ending? I had no problems, no problems at all.

I've seen other people comment about the way you're forced into a single outcome. Perhaps it should have been a cutscene, such as with the Marlene part afterwards, or perhaps it should have given the player a choice, so that you could have two different endings. That would have been quite interesting, especially after everything you have gone through during the game.

Still, I loved it and can't fault it.

Oh, and the doctor and the nurses in the operating room at the end? I shot all three. I shot all three in the bloody face, while shouting out "**** you, and **** humanity!".

I didn't even realise the doctor was armed, I just shot him ASAP. Then one nurse screamed out "You monster!", and I shot her. Then the last nurse cowered in the corner of the room, and I shot her too.

Screw them all.

Nicely summed up.

I only shot the doctors and nurses in theatre because everyone in this game either wants to shoot you or chew your neck out, I didn't want to leave anything to chance lol

Besides, it woukdnt be in Joel's style to leave them alive, though on reflection and on my second play through I will spare the cowering nurse.

It is a very good story and game. It's not my favorite psychological survival horror, that would be Silent Hll 2 - a game that has more depth.

However, I do think this is certainly the best American survival horror game ever made. The ending was defintely not as I was expecting but very appropriate; something more sweeter would not have felt right.
