Earlier today I realized that a good deal of the music I like has really odd timing, and in particular multiple time signatures.

I think I like it because it always feels like the music is just about to get away from you.

A few examples:

Mr. Gnome - House of Circles

Mew - Introducing Palace Players

The National - Fake Empire

Regency Buck - At The Disco

Faith No More - Everything's Ruined

Anyone else have music they like with weird timing?

Pink Floyd - Bike

The time signature is all over the place from line to line and verse to verse...

The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun

The middle eight instrumental solo line has (I think) four different time signatures in four consecutive bars

I know of several songs in 5/4 time, and The Impossible Dream is in 9/8 time...

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd and The Beatles (Google Play says I have 15 hours of Pink Floyd in my library)... and they both commonly use weird timings (I guess it's a bit ironic that Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite is 4/4...)

Pretty much anything by Soundgarden & The Porcupine Tree

When I saw this thread title is instantly thought - 'Introducing Palace Players' by Mew. But you'd already got there first

Welcome to my world!!

Most of the bansd I likten to use odd time signatures. Tool, Dream Theater, TesseracT, Enochian Theory, Diagonal, etc all use some very strange ones!

There are plenty of examples here: List of musical works in unusual time signatures, Dream Theater are listed several times!

Yes, Pink Floyd and the Beatles had quiet a few songs with odd time signatures in. Money is 5/4 time until the solo and the different time signatures in Happiness Is A Warm Gun would make some drummers completely freak out!

Not sure about the intro, but the drumming seems to be mostly in 4/4 with the occasional odd bar in the mix.

the main song is 4/4, it's only the middle bit that goes into 6/8, which isn't that dissimilar to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, She Said She Said which both all mix 4/4 with 3/4, and Good Morning Good Morning, which mixes 5/4 with 4/4...

EDIT: Just found this interesting site

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ime_signatures

That says some transcriptions of Happiness Is A Warm Guin has part of it in an unusual time signature but doesn't elaborate...(look under 'Partially in 9/8, 9/4, or 9/2')

'Everything in it's right place' (Radiohead) has 10 beats per bar and is seriously creepy. But i still love it!

Pink floyds money confused me no end when I tried to learn it by ear, ..its a clever song that doesnt sound like odd timing, until you start counting the beats. The penny dropped when I did that. lol
I believe the mid section is straight 4/4.

"Golden Brown" by the Stranglers alternates 6/8 and 7/8. (Once memorably described as "A waltz with a limp").

Pyramid Song - Radiohead. Speeds up, slows down, and all sorts of time signatures. Great song.
