Which song do you think is the one good song?

Interesting you think all the rest is hype when they've constantly evolved their sound. Each to their own but when you look at everything Alex Turner has done (including The Last Shadow Puppets and Submarine soundtrack) and the differences between all four Arctic Monkeys albums I think Turner is a genius and I don't use that word lightly.

You need to broaden your musical horizons....imho. Alex Turner will be viewed as the iconic songwriter of his generation in the years to come, mark my words. Consistently brilliant whilst, very unusually, not sticking to a ''familiar' sound.

Just because a band / solo artist evloves their sound that doesn't meant they cant be / arn't hyped. Its just my opinion I didnt say Turner was a terrible song writer I just think hes mediocre at best and the god like genius label that the music industry attach to him is mis placed. Its just my opinion.

So I don't rate Alex Turner therefore my musical horizons must be limited - what a strange world you live in. You don't know my musical tastes so how do you know I need to broaden them ? I could say the same to you that because you think Alex Turner is an Iconic Songwriter then you need to broader your musical horizons - but that would be just silly

We all need to broaden our horizons musically, of course, just some need to do it much more than others.

One good song, pffttt....

Fair to middling. Like a lot of their songs it's competent but a bit boring and samey. They could do with 'evolving' at a faster pace imo .

You need to broaden your musical horizons.
That sounds absolutely ridiculous coming from you. If I was drinking tea it would now be all over my keyboard .

Fair enough, everyone is entitled to their opinion. You're wrong though! Haha.

Just out of interest, (and you didn't answer me first time), what is the one good song you think they've done?

Can't stop playing this song. What a band. Can't wait for Glastonbury, they will tear it up. One of the best live bands in the world imo. And Alex Turner shows much more experienced songwriters just how to write intelligent, relatable lyrics that actually make sense. You get the feeling he actually puts some effort into his writing and has pride in what the band release.

I never understand this band, it appeared all of a sudden the British media and radio wanted to try and revive Rock music in the charts - sadly they backed this extremely average band to do it.

I'm really surprised you don't like them, given their high Metacritic scores.

And that's my point - they have these decent'ish scores and yet when I listen to them i'm left thinking they are extremely average. Like a British version of The Strokes.

I mean I don't dislike them or anything - they are just ok...but they are supposed to be so much better than just ok!

I don't think they've ever made anything that sounds like The Strokes. I guess they're one of those bands that divides opinions. As I've said, I don't throw the word genius about but I genuinely think Alex Turner is. His lyrics are brilliant, from his observational wit on the first album through to the darker Humbug era wordplay and then the magnificent Last Shadow Puppets and Submarine EP. Five albums and an EP that are all different styles and all as good as each other in my book.

Out of interest who do you think are better?

and I think your opinion is wrong lol .....I dont see the point in saying which one song of theirs I like , if the song has a certain style it will just egg on some people to say i only like one style of music.

I wasn't comparing them musically to The Strokes - I just felt the hype that came with both bands was similar, a lot of hype before they had even released their debut album! It seemed the music press had decided to champion these bands.

Spot on .....sadly for the Artics when they broke in this country the Music industry were not just desperately looking for the next big British Band but the next big Global British band . Oasis never really achieved the Global dominance that they could have and the BPI picked the Artics to achieve and revive British Rock music ...they mis-calculated.

Turner's songwriting puts AM on a higher level to most bands. Without his way with words they'd be just another band in the same way that The Smiths would have been just another band. But they weren't

The Smiths didnt just have in Morrrisey a great songwriter but the smiths knew how important the tune, melody and hook are to the song - imho as important as the lyrics . AM dont seem to understand that.

Although Alex is verging on genius (I won't use that word willy nilly, it's something that imo is probably only capable of being given in hindsight and after many years) I do think he does his best work writing for the band. Plus being a great band is not just a case of getting together great session musicians and giving them songs to play, it's more about the synergy/history etc. The fact that the band members all come from within a 2 mile radius of each other is, imo, massively important. Plus they prove that you don't necessarily have to be top notch virtuoso musicians to be considered one of the world's best live bands (but don't under estimate how good they can play). Having said that, I'm sure I spy a 12 string guitar being played by Alex on the live youtube vids of this song.
