Amidst all the talk about who could/should be the Twelfth Doctor, I've been wondering about a potential replacement for John Simm's Master, if and when he decides not to reprise the role in the future.

I recall Daniel Mays being mentioned on here once, a suggestion I'm very keen on, personally. Having seen him as the main antagonist in the conclusion to Ashes to Ashes, I would say he is very capable of being both manipulative and creepy, yet at times manic, just like The Master should be.

Yes, I know he's been in Doctor Who before, but so had Karen Gillan, Freema Agyeman, Colin Baker and Lalla Ward to name a few, before they were cast in their primary roles.

And while we're on the A2A theme, I wouldn't mind seeing Philip Glenister appear in the role, either. Better still in his Gene Hunt persona, that would be amazing. How ironic would it be to have Sam Tyler regenerate into The Guv?

There are others but I'll get around to them later. I'm mostly interested in hearing suggestions from the rest of the forum.

I know it was always extremely unlikely to happen but I always wanted Cumberbatch vs Matt Smith!

I've not watched Sherlock or anything else with Cumberbatch in it (to the best of my recollection), so I can't comment on his acting ability, but I must admit he certainly looks the part. There's something about him in the pics I've seen which vaguely reminds me of the Fourth Doctor, which can only be a good thing.

Maybe the master could reappear in matt smiths finale as he was in tom bakers, syl McCoy and tennants departures. No idea who could play him but would have a top actor cast. John hurt would be ideal. maybe he is the master ?

Ever since I saw Tom Riley as Wickham in Lost in Austen, I've thought he would do a fine job.

They could bring Geoffrey Beevers back, he would look exactly the same with the make up etc.

Just to mix it up a little imagine if the Master was in the 50th Anniversary and was played by the same actor who Matt Smith then goes on to regenerate into!

It's a shame they has already used (and wasted) Tim Dalton in the Who Universe - he would have made a fantastic Master in my opinion.

Bear in mind that the Master is a serial body-snatcher whose last body was becoming seriously unstable. The fact that he was last seen attacking Rassilon actually makes Timothy Dalton quite a strong contender for the role.

Peter Capaldi
Anthony Calf
and a completely left-field piece of casting...Rik Mayall. Alan B'Stard isn't that far removed (if hammed up for comedic effect) to Roger Delgado...

I have two actors I would like to see play The Master. My first choice would be James Nesbitt as he can do evil. He was great in Jekyll.

My second choice is Art Malik.

It depends on who's playing the doctor - if it's still Matt them Benidick ( not going to happen i know he's way to busy) would be wonderful as they have similar energy levels, like Tennant and Simms. But 12 might want someone different to play with.

The Master in charge of the Timelords...now that could be tasty.

Intriguing choice.

I like him in DaVinci's Demons though he's not particularly menacing there.

You forgot Catherine Tate and Billie Piper.

I'm enjoying the suggestions so far.

Penelope Wilton, of course.

But would she have to become The Mistress?

Nah, she'd still be the Master

Failing that, Tom Hiddleston!

Steven Robertson - did a fantastic job at creepy, manic, evil, dark, and so on, as Rook in Being Human (plus the Bletchley Circle, Luther, etc.).

If Julian Rhind-Tutt is going to be the Doctor, then I want to see Stephen Mangan as the Master! It would be really cool to see those two reunited again on screen, they were so good together. Actually, I can envisage it better the other way round, but that may be because Julian has played a few bad guys, while Stephen seems to have played quite a lot of nice guys.

But seriously, I think Marc Warren would be an excellent choice. (Yes, I know he's already had a minor role in Dr Who, but I don't think it would matter.) His performance as Mr Teatime in The Hogfather indicates how good he could be as the Master (although without the American accent obviously).

And I really like this suggestion as well.
