Electronic Arts will not bring back its online pass system, despite Microsoft's decision to scrap planned DRM measures for the Xbox One.

EA's John Reseburg said that the firm's decision to scrap the online pass system was based on player feedback and nothing else.

"[There is] no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass. It is dead," Reseburg told Polygon.
No online pass despite the U turn from MS last night.

They may not call it that but I'd be very surprised if they didn't come up with something.. this is EA after all.

I think these companies are beginning to realise that you cannot impose draconian DRM on customers. We just wont stand for it. The vast majority of us have no interest in pirated games so we don't like being treated as potential criminals.

Agree with that. I also have no interest in pirated games and the big AAA titles that I'm interested in I'll buy new. Other games I will either wait until they come down in price or buy pre owned by trading older games.

If the price was right I'd probably buy more games by digital download but as it stands it's just too expensive.

Also I've never bought an online pass, I actually don't know anyone who has, but I have bought in game such as new characters (WWE 13 for example) if it appeals to me.

Just my stance on the whole thing really.

Online passes are not DRM.

If they offer downloadable games at a fair price then I'm happy to buy that way, there is no need for passes and DRM, they just need to treat customers fair and not rip them off and offer a good deal.

I bought The Last of Us from PSN because the price reflected the retail price.

They'll just start charging for in-game content.

Guns for Battlefield.

The Championship, Leagues 1 and 2 for FIFA.

Gloves for Fight Night (you can't enter the ring without 'em!).

Games that go on sale will never be complete again.

Of course it is. It Manages (M) the Rights (R) to who has access to the Digital (D) content.

As opposed to the bug fests that get released at the moment?

They already do that with Battlefield

FIFA wont happen as not many will be interested in the lower leagues. Ultimate team is their cash cow and it makes serious cash.

Gloves but wont happen. (although they probably had meetings)

Their games are already bug fests. Each FIFA has been littered with new and old bugs. Their intro lags on FIFA 13. A lagging intro! How? from this multimillion dollar company.

Online passes are pointless... We are dropping our online pass system from current title as Gamestop demand 1000s of keys or they will not stock our games. I think the future will be smaller games with lots more DLC. It is the only way to profit from games in the long run now that rentals and second hand games are still available.

No.

It is a separate product/licence that comes bundled with physical copies of the disc that grants you access to the online services.

Just like a Netflix subscription grants you access to it's online content, but your Netflix subscription is not DRM.

Nor is Xbox LIVE DRM, as that too is required to play the online game.

The only online pass I have bought in recent times was for bf3 and that was only because no one told me I would need a pass when I bought it second hand in game.

EA consider it to be DRM. Perhaps you wish to take it up with them!
