Nec 338

Has anyone tested or got the 338?

It's supposed to be the smallest 3g phone in europe, I've read the reviews online, I also know it's a bit low on features but wanted a real persons review.

A friend of mine - against my better judgement might I add - recently signed up to 3 for 12 months and took this handset.

And in 5 weeks he has told me he has not had one problem or dropped call. Yes, it is VERY low on features & memory etc, but it's possible that NEC may have finally cracked it with this handset.

For BASIC users, it's probably an alright choice. I'd still go for the C975 if working on a Threepay budget or E/A1000 if contract.

I'd agree with that. The c975 software is really really fast, probably the fastest phone I'd used for a long time and whilst it doesnt have bluetooth for £40 its a steal.

I've got the LG8120 as well and the only advantage over the c975 is that its smaller, apart from that, the c975 does everything else better.

Yes E1000 top phone. Gotta get one if only to unlock it and use it on Orange

Thanks guys, I quite like the look of it aswell.
I may puchase one next week, if I can find it nice and cheap somewhere on threepay.

The c975 comes with 2mb memory

The 338 has 17mb

I have owned both but prefer the 338. You cant download videos on the c975. Plus compared to the 338 its massive.

Expansion slot on c975
C975 more than half the price of the Motorola

Sure the Motorol is big, but NEC always make buggy phones no matter what size they are!

You can download videos. Thought you said memory was not cheap. £17 for 128MB is cheap! Hehehe You sure you know what the C975 is?!

Ha! Wrong again.

Really you should not argue with me, I know what I am saying is true.

Expand the memory with Transflash and you can save video.

Of course you seem to think that £17 for 128MB of memory is alot of money, so maybe that is why you think you cannot save video.... hehehe

You dont like to lose an argument do you?!!

I know alot about phones, not just about 3g handsets.

Seems you lost the argument so resort to insults!!

Anyway, for someone who thinks £17 for 128MB of memory is alot of money I'd consider you ignoring me, a great favour

Even though i cant see what he is saying i have found this

I dont believe you can download video content - Just quickplay.
The C975 only has 2MB of memory as standard (Unlike for example the NEC616v that has >10mb) so I believe Three disabled this function.

Even if you upgrade the memory with a Transflash card I'm 99% certain you still cant download as Three have restricted the download of video to the internal phone memory only due to potential copyright isssues of downloading to removable media.

Thats a network thing.

Has nothing to do with the capabilities of the C975.

Better luck next time

Whats more, very soon I'll give people option to remove Three's personalisation of Motorola handsets returning it to generic C975 spec.......

This makes fascinating reading guys, so are you saying then that the 338 is a better phone than the 975 because of the 17mb memory?

I really don't care if it has 128 or 17, or 2 the phone looks nice and practical. That is as far as practical can be on 3's network.

I have never had any problem downloading and keeping any video on any of the 3 network phones I have had. Still have clips from monty pyhon that I downloaded 18 months ago on my phone, as well as angry kid I downloaded last week.

To Summarise - The C975 has the least amount of on board memory of any 3 handset.

Three lock the majority of their content so you can't 'Send' it. However, this exempts you from moving it onto a Memory Card. As a result, there is a load of content that you can only quickplay and not Save & play.

It's a real shame, and a nasty downer in an otherwise great phone.
