Why's Neighbours more popular in UK than H&A?
I've always found it weird that Neighbours in Australia is less popular than H&A, yet over here in the UK it's the complete opposite. Is it that the brits like the cheese factor that Neighbours brings and the aussies prefer the more dramatic stuff (disasters etc) that goes on in H&A?
What do people think is the reason? |

I personally prefer Home and Away to Neighbours. Neighbours gets really boring.

I think it's mostly down to being the first one shown and of course the fantastic support the BBC gave it.
ITV treated Home & Away badly and it didn't air on all regions at the same time. Plus when Home and Away left ITV there was an 18 month break before it was shown on Five where as with Neigbours it ended on BBC1 on the Friday and the following Monday it aired on Channel 5 For the 90's and up to 2007 Neighbours was always the better one but Home and Away took over (In my opinion) both at present are crap but would prefer Home and Away. |

I much prefer Home and Away to Neighbours. Neighbours is just far too cheesy for me.

Neighbours is lighter and an easier background watch when you're having lunch.

I think when the BBC first bought Neighbours they saw it as a brighter, less serious version of Eastenders and the BBC gave it great support throughout its time on there.

I prefer the mix of characters in Neighbours, and there's a (seemingly) slightly older cast. Plus there is a wider range of storylines. H&A just seems to revolve around the bloody boring Braxtons...

Heavily trailed, it'll be high-rating for C5 and Fremantle. |

It also has advantage that it never had a break in being on air the way Home and Away did.
Also didn't Home and Away have a special which involved Atomic Kitten, all a bit odd really. Neighbours got a Spice Girl! |

H&A is visually stunning but the Braxton stories are on a repeat cycle with the older cast becoming support members. But I think there are signs that will change (ie with Sally's return). it's lost it's heart. |

You can't really call the braxtons boring. The only drama that happens in home and away involves the braxtons.

I used to prefer Neighbours and I stopped watching Home and Away because it was terrible at one point but started watching it again last year and there have been some excellent story lines. Neighbours was boring a while back but it has started to get interesting with the new families arriving.
Unfortunately annoying characters like Georgia and Sonya are forced into too many scenes. |

Neighbours has improved a bit but it's still too cheesy for my liking. Home and Away has always created better teens (yes, they often get annoying by the end but they tend to start off well), whereas Neighbours hardly ever seems to get them right. The ratings in their own country are very telling. If it wasn't for the UK, I don't think Neighbours would be around any more. There is a lot of misguided loyalty to Neighbours in this country, and I think most of you are right that it's due to which one started first and the way H&A was treated when it moved channels. |
