I've just read on macrumors that apple plans to upgrade the processors and the wifi cards in the new iMac imminently so I've cancelled my order. when I bought my third gen iPad , 2 weeks later they brought out the 4th gen which pissed me right off so this time I'm hanging on I've saved up to long to get caught like that again.
I know there will always be updates and upgrades but I'd like it to be the best available for longer than a fortnight

It's a pretty reasonable expectation that the other Macs will get at least a CPU refresh if nothing else and that it will happen this summer so it's not a long wait either so you're doing the right thing IMO.

It happened to me with my original iMac back in 2003. Bought it in September 2003 with OS X Jaguar installed. Not knowing much about Apple's release schedule at the time, it wasn't till I'd had the iMac a while, I realised I'd got the one with USB 1.1 ports and Apple had actually released an updated model in September 2003 with USB 2.0 ports, then in October 2003 OS X Panther was released! However having bought the Mac from PC World and not directly from Apple themselves I didn't get that much advice from the assistant in the shop and they were probably wanting to get rid of the old model so never mentioned anything about the upgraded one (which actually had already been released when I got my iMac)

Having said that, it has been a great machine and 10 years on still works brilliantly, upgraded RAM to 768 MBs and has been running OS X Tiger for several years now (upgraded straight from Jaguar, bypassing Panther).

Since learning from experience, I've got to know when Apple normally do their announcing/upgrading of hardware so when it came to ordering my new MacBook Air, I decided to wait till after WWDC 2013 before ordering and am also considering getting a iMac as well as my main desktop, but like you say, it is highly likely a new one will be released either in the summer or early autumn.

They do not update their desktops as regularly as their laptops. So you can wait and wait, give up, buy the current model, and then they update it But they were quick with laptops this time, I think they already have models with Haswell.

You're talking about a display with a 14-megapixel resolution for the 27-inch for retina. You're would need a computer with Mac Pro levels of performance to drive such a hi-res display.
