OVERNIGHT RATINGS
Below are overnight ratings from all the episodes of Strictly ever. 'Live' or 'Overnight' data is produced the next day from the previous day's transmission. It does not include ‘time-shift’ viewers. Overnight ratings are the type of ratings most often reported in the media. How will series 11 compare in the ratings? I take issue with line 973 and therefore have no faith in any other of your statistics. Would you check it all again please.

Interesting statistics - thanks for putting them all together.
I would have liked all the ratings for 2006 though as that was the series I started watching - I'm sure that must have had a massive impact on the ratings

A bit of talk on here as to if the 'Brucie bonus' will boost ratings, well, will it?

Thanks for all your work on this Hassaan13, those stats are very interesting to see. Amazing that series 8 was overall the most successful. That was the year of the John Sergeant controversy if I remember rightly. Also I always consider the first 6 seasons the "golden age" of the series, but the ratings don't bear that out.
Arlene leaving after season 6 didn't have much detrimental impact at all and there was a lot of controversy over several seasons thereafter with the voting fiasco, Anton's alleged racist comments and the BBC allegedly moving the show to deprive X-Factor of viewers. But it seems controversy was no bad thing for the show. Question is can they keep the ratings so high. I feel that so long as they don't mess with the format and schedule too much and so long as they get good celebrities they will be on another winner this year. Re Brucie, i think he annoys the hell out of a lot of people and he is definitely getting somewhat past it. But against that I also believe he is a genuine ratings winner because some people have grown up with him and almost perceive him as family. I think this outweighs, by far, the effect that he has on those who just want to fast forward through his routines. My guess is that the BBC know this only too well and that is why he is still here this season despite some pretty awful nails on blackboard moments last year. |

Also, it had Harry Hill having his take on it every other week which may have gotten more people interested (more so than 2011 as he seemed to have run out of material then). I wonder if ITV will risk having Strictly clash with X Factor? I think it would be nice for both shows to rate well this year (like 2010). |

Looks like it'll end up facing Stepping Out on launch night, what kind of ratings do you think it'll get?

Ultimate Strictly has all the stats about the series and the breakdown about who was in which individual programme. Interesting that last year wasn't actually the highest ratings on average since that is what was said at the time. |

I don't think that was ever claimed - it was just that that was the year where it simply blew X Factor away, beating it in the overnights every single week. 2010 had higher ratings principally because of the Big Freeze but never once managed to top the X Factor, which was hitting gargantuan numbers at the time. Strictly towering over Simon Cowell was a bigger news story than the actual ratings in comparison to previous years.

Last year's series averaged 9.98m (40.8%) in the overnights. 10.80m in the official figures - both exclude the Christmas special and the launch show.
2011 averaged 10.14m (40.3%) in the overnights, and 10.97m in the officials. Wasn't too far off 2010 which averaged 11.07m in the officials. So share wise, it looks like it did better last year. I think the claims of 'highest ratings ever' or 'highest since 2010' came just because the final last year rated better than 2011, and it's Sunday pre-recorded results shows actually began to beat X Factor's Sunday LIVE results show but some of the Saturday ratings weren't topped. It overlapped with X Factor quite often in 2008, though didn't come to beating it much. It only beat it once that year, when X Factor was still in the bootcamp stage. It's been said that an extra celebrity will be joining the line-up this year, making 15. The launch may be brought back a week or two. |

A 10-minute overlap for Strictly & X Factor, already!
The schedules for Saturday 7th September show the following: BBC One 18:05 - Pointless Celebrities 19:00 - Strictly Come Dancing 20:10 - National Lottery: Break the Safe ITV 18:30 - Stepping Out 20:00 - X Factor Strictly may end up damaging Stepping Out more, however. |

Probably a good time to bump this up now. Predictions for tonight?

I hope for more then X Factor. Maybe over 10 million because it got those numbers last year.

For the launch show a figure around 7.5m would be good.

I think the launch show will be a little lower this year - still around 7.5m though

People may wait till the real show starts, the sun is shining (here at least) and the rest of BBC's Saturday night is weak at the moment so I think it will be down. I just hope it isn't at a level where people can claim the ITV dancing show has dented it, because I don't think that would be fair. I think it's going to be a good series this year, with an interesting line-up but I don't see anyone there who will bring in high ratings by bringing in people who don't normally watch the show.
