Has anyone had their teeth laser whitened? Do you think it's safe?

Yeah, I do Zoom laser whitening.

It's "safe" but it makes your teeth sensitive as hell. Whenever I get mine done, I gotta brush a few times a day with Sensodyne and sometimes I'd get these weird shocks of pain in my mouth.

After a while the sensitivity fades and you're fine.

It softens you're enamel and whitens the insides of your teeth, that's how it works.

I had mine done by a mobile idiot who wrecked my gum-line and caused me to have bleeding gums/bad breath for weeks... hated it. Since then I've had that sorted (thank god) and have had my teeth professionally whitened. They're much better. Now I'm gonna get mine done NON-PEROXIDE by a mobile beautician whose results are quite frankly, outstanding

If you read the link it tells you who is allowed legally to practice tooth whitening; essentially it is a dental treatment and should not be undertaken by anyone not qualified to do so. This includes beauty therapists, mobile or salon.

"Only dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists (working to the prescription of a dentist) can carry out tooth whitening."

Tip from my dentist is to put sensitive toothpaste into gum trays and wear them for 20/30 minutes.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I had "laser whitening" this week, and it has made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Although I always take good care of my teeth, I've always felt they're a bit yellowish. I go to the dentist every six months to get a scale and polish with my check-up, and I also give my teeth a brush every couple of weeks with bicarbonate of soda and a mild solution of peroxide to remove any potential staining.
I did explain this to the girl carrying out the procedure, but she went ahead anyway, promising fabulous results. However, my teeth were not whitened at all.
She fobbed me off promising that it's an "oxidisation process" which takes a further 24hrs for full results, so I paid and left.
However, I'm really pi**ed off as I think they are basically passing off "whitening" as "stain removal".

Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth with removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot make a complete colour change, but it may lighten the existing shade.

When people have their teeth whitened like that the "instant results" they tend to see is due to the fact that your teeth will have been massively dehydrated during the process, which makes them appear whiter. After a day or two the teeth naturally rehydrate hence the original colour tends to come back. This is why most "laser whitening" packages normally include at home whitening gel and trays to wear which needs to be done after the chair side treatment- it's normally this that gives you the best and longest results, not laser tooth whitening.

Your teeth can only go so white. People like Joey Essex etc with gleaming White teeth have not had them whitened. They have veneers where they pick how white they want their teeth and the veneers are then designed for them. In terms of teeth whitening, how white your teeth will go depends on the amount of natural dentine that occurs in your teeth. My teeth are naturally quite white and I have a friend who's teeth are similar to mine. We both had our teeth whitened using ZOOM. My teeth came out looking even whiter than before and looked amazing....so did my friends but not as white as mine. It's just down to the amount of natural dentine in your teeth as to how white they will go. When your teeth are whitened, the gel that they use to whiten them softens the enamel and the gel gets into your teeth and reacts with the dentine, and whitens them. After the procedure, the enamel hardens again. I would recommend ZOOM teeth whitening to anyone wanting to whiten their teeth.

I had it done and it left my sensitive teeth in agony it was so bad I ended up in A&E. I had to keep rinsing my mouth out with milk to wash away the bleach. It was three days of absolute misery never ever again. The dentist hadn't put the barrier on properly to protect my gums and didn't warn me of complications I may have having sensitive teeth.

I brush my teeth every once in a while with a lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda paste I make up that removes any stains on my teeth and makes them brighter.

I don't want "dazzling" white teeth, or a "Hollywood Smile". I'd just like my well-taken-care-of teeth to be a bit less on the "creamy" side of the colour factor, and that's what I thought was being offered - Particularly since the daft wee lassie doing the treatment was pointing at colour shades well down the scale as the likely result!
