REVIEWED: Little Boots - Hands
Hello. So the 3rd poll, and by the far closest yet, saw Little Boots' debut album win by just one vote beating former leader Loreen. So without further ado, this is my review of Hands.
After being crowned BBC'S Sound of 2009, Little Boots had a lot of hype and expectations to live up to with her debut collection Hands. And, i am sure most of you will agree, she definitely lived up to these expectations, perhaps even exceeding them. If you just look at her single releases; album opener New in Town is brash, edgy and extremely catchy, Earthquake is another song with a great chorus you just can't help singing along with and her biggest hit Remedy being one of the perfect pop/electro songs of the past few years. What could be expected, after 3 such strong singles, is an album full of fillers. Well, you would be totally wrong to think this. Hearts Collide and Symmetry are both romantic, well written songs that enable the listener to hear a more personal side to Little Boots, aka Victoria Hesketh, take centre stage. The production throughout the album as a whole is to a very high standard, with Meddle and Mathematics benefitting from sounding different but completely fitting in with the rest of the album, if that makes sense. Stuck on Repeat is another example of this; it begins with a dark jarring sound that, when it reaches the chorus, allows Vic's vocals really shine and is one of the highlights of the album. Click and Ghost are two songs that again show off Little Boots' songwriting ability, the former being about failed friendships and the latter about being a, er, ghost. Tune into my Heart is a little on the cheesy side and No Brakes doesn't really do anything for me, but on the whole, the album is full of corkers and potential single releases. I haven't got round to hearing new material from her yet, but judging by her debut Hands, Bootsy's star certainly deserves to continue rising. TOP 3 TRACKS = New in Town, Earthquake, Stuck on Repeat DUD TRACK = No Brakes RELATED ARTISTS = La Roux, Katy B, Roisin Murphy OVERALL RATING = 8/10 Thank you very much for reading, hope you enjoyed my review

Great review. My top three are the same as yours. My worst though would probably be the title track, it sounds so out of place.
You should check out some of the other tracks from the Hands era: Catch 22 (from the Japanese edition of Hands) and Not Now, Love Kills and Magical (from the Illuminations EP). They're all pretty amazing. |
