Does anybody agree?

I want a phone with a battery that needs to be charged once a week.

Yeah, well there's that.

I want a smartphone that doesn't need to be charged all the time. The mobile sector needs to invest in a battery that has an amazing life. Just imagine for a second.. Charging your phone up once a week. Not having the worry of whether your device will go off or not whilst you're out.

they are investing in batteries. very heavily. but it's not progressing at the same rate as other things.

more progress is being made in the energy consumption of the devices themselves.

but sadly any progress that is made is just used to make the devices thinner. and it's our own fault.

I charge my phone over night. I'm asleep then anyway. A longer lasting battery would be welcomed but it's not really a problem.

Depends on how heavily you use it. The battery in my HTC Desire isn't holding charge as well as it did when it were a lad but even so I doubt I charge it as often as once a week. Simply because I don't use it much.

No doubt if I had it surgically attached to my ear like some I see and used it 24/7 I might be charging it up a bit more often. But it comes down to how to define "average" usage as that is pretty much how the manufacturers would describe the battery life.

Same here.

I don't really get the constant battery whining to be honest.

It also depends on how much I use it. If I'm endlessly messaging and browsing it drains the power quicker but if I barely use it I can easily go to bed with 60% power (maybe more) left.

I think the people that complain most about the battery life are the ones that are glued to their phone constantly.

ETA: I also think the "turn the brightness down" thing is a myth. Whether my phone brightness is right up, half way or right down doesn't make any difference to the battery life.

by far the biggest drain on a modern phone's battery, when in use, is the screen.

the obsession comes from the fact that those of us who have had phones for more than a few years remember when you could go away for the weekend without having to take a phone charger.

Processors and Screens are becoming far more efficient. At a rate that is quicker than battery tech. The issue isn't that battery tech isn't improving quickly it is.. at a great speed now. It's just the tech needs to be shrunk to fit phones. Q4 13 & Q1 14 should see far more improvements in that area.

The battery life on my first phone was about 6 hours. I had an extended one that lasted about 10. They changed the battery tech after that from NiMH to Li and that improved the life to days. But of course old phones were complete shite, all you could do was talk and text. Not like todays pocket computers. Longer battery life would be great but not at the expense of innovation.

I'm not sure that old phones were shite.

No, I don't think they were. They did what they did and did it well.

Compared to now old phones are very basic but back when they were released they were brilliant. My very first phone was a Nokia something and you could clip the front cover on and off with loads of designs and change the arial haha At the time I thought it was fantastic.

I wouldn't call it whining. I'd say 70% of consumers who purchase smartphones are on them a lot more than the average user years ago. I bet the average person now is glued to their mobile hence why we need improved battery life. It benefits the customers so much that I don't think it will ever happen though.

I run my own business, and if I have a busy day I can charge my Lumia 920 2 or 3 times! My old N8 would easily make a day, and my 808 just. WP doesn't seem as power efficient, even taking account of the larger screen.

If a smartphone battery can last from my first cup of coffee in the morning until I go to bed around midnight, I'm happy.
