at the moment I am on an orange pay monthly contract, now past the end of contract date, and was thinking of moving to a sim only contract less money per month and more talk time, and already using my own handset anyway, has any one else swapped from pay monthly to sim only and how painful was it having to sort it with Orange CS

Dead easy. Just ring em and tell em that's what you want to do, but make sure you get them to offer you a good deal to stay!
