Sun cream

Sounds a silly question but is it safe to put sun cream on dogs? If not, can you buy special doggy sun cream?

Our dog has short hair but his belly is almost bald. I noticed yesterday he was laying in the garden for a while and now he has a red patch on his pink belly.

It doesnt seem sore but he wears a harness so i wouldnt want him to burn and then have a harness rubbing on it.

It didnt happen last year in the sun so im not sure if it is sunburn or if hes just rubbed himself on path when he was playing and irritated his skin.

I have been using childrens sun block for years on Mollie but have always worried about her licking it, I did see dog sunscreen the other day on the net will see if I can find the link for you.

Just remembered it's a company called viovet.

Ah thank you. I was wary of putting normal sun cream on incase he licked it off or it irritated his skin. If they do a specially designed dog one i would try it.

I put human sunscreen on the bit in front of Rens nose, as the fur is very thin there and she is white.

I used to use kids factor 50 on my old cats ears - they were white and prone to skin cancer.

i use my own UV sensitive sun cream on my boys nose as he has a white face, couple of years back it burned and stayed red for a few days, so now it gets slapped on whenever the sun is out.

he licks it but it's never done him any harm.
he also tries licking it off my legs when i wear it, so it must taste nice :P
i discourage him, but it's never harmed him.
i use a baby wipe to remove it on a night
