I often have my email account open on my PC but if an email comes to my mobile phone first, it then doesn't arrive on my PC account. How can I sort this so I receive emails on my phone AND on my PC?

Thanks

Who do you have email with? I have Gmail and Virginmedia emails. Both come through to my phone but they are also there in the accounts when I use my laptop.

You should be using IMAP on your phone. it sounds like you are using POP.

who is your provider?

well i know why.

it's because you are using pop3 mail.

I've just checked my phone settings - incoming server is imap.talktalk.net. On the PC it is POP3.

Also, just received and read an email on the PC which hasnt come through to the phone!

Use the IMAP server on both would be my suggestion. The pop is not downloading the mail because it has been marked as read by the IMAP client. You may be able to change a setting to affect that but pop was not designed for accessing from more than one location.

Thanks but Windows Live Mail won't let me change my account from a POP3 server.

If you direct your Windows Live Mail email into your Gmail account and use the imap server for Gmail, that should solve your issue. You should be able to set it up in the settings for gmail (the section called Forwarding/pop/imap).

I think she means the program WLM rather than hotmail/outlook/whatever.

You'll need to add a new account I guess.

I read it as Windows Live Mail, the replacement for Hotmail, so you'd be able to direct that through Gmail as I've done with other mail accounts.

It's also worth doing just for GMail's spam filtering.

OK. What is now called Windows Live Hotmail used to be called Windows Live Mail. Frankly I don't know why they didn't just keep "Hotmail" at least everyone knew what it was. Microsoft are rubbish at branding.

You just need to change the settings in your email client to leave the email on the server. I use pop3 and it's set this way and it works fine.

Emails go to both.

I can delete them from the phone but if I log into gmail on the PC they are still there.

The problem is you are stretching pop beyond I'd design and not all mail providers work well or the same in this space. Gmail is very unusual, it ignores a lot of the pop standards, it has a pop interface rather than is a pop server.

IMAP is what is required here.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm still having problems!

btw the Windows Live Mail I was talking about was the email program with Windows 7.

Here's a summary -

This Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is a new phone to me. I was using a Blackberry (it broke) without a problem and I could access emails both on the phone and the PC.

I have talktalk email and google email. I have followed instructions to set them up and they both have imap as the incoming server.
With talktalk, the problem seems to be as mentioned above - the emails are either on my phone or the PC but not both which is very annoying.
With google email, sometimes the emails arrive in the account I set up and other times they come to the GMail application!

I really need to sort both accounts but I'm a bit of a novice so any help would be greatly received!

Thanks!

they need to be set to IMAP on your phone and on your computer.

with the gmail either use the gmail app or the native mail client. not both.

Thanks for all your help flagpole but still having problems!
On the PC it says - "My incoming mail server is a POP3 server" - and it won't let me change the POP3 bit.

On the Phone - I can't seem to delete the Gmail app - I keep "removing" it but it's still there in applications!

Sorry to be a pest!

you can't delete the gamil app. you just set it not to sync.

you will have to add the account again to WLM as imap. you can add the new account alongside the existing one until you are happy.

How would you go about setting it up? I have a Windows Live Mail account for my university email and I hate the webmail interface. It's clunky and slow. I'm thinking of directing it to Gmail but having the address show up as my university one when I send and receive emails. The latter part is especially important as lecturers won't accept emails from the likes of Gmail or Yahoo.

you are going to have to read the whole thread though.
