Tv turns on at 6/7 most mornings!

My tv occasionally turns itself on in the morning! There are no timers or alarms before anyone suggests that!
Any ideas what's causing it?!
It is a tv which lives on stand by mode and is used infrequently by my self. So it's not that I'm pressing buttons by myself an quite often I have to search to find the remote!

If it's on standby it could be picking up the signal from a neighbour's remote. Used to happen in my last place.

Samsung TV? My main TV used to switch itself on even though I knew I had turned it off. Eventually it took a while to turn on and then started to turn itself off. Bad capacitors were the issue where Samsung had put two 10V capacitors on a 13V rail! A mate who works with electronics replaced said capacitors, the cost of them around £3 or so.

Turn the electrics off at the wall when you're not using the TV. Yes it's a pain in the arse, but it will cure the issue.

That's interesting, my Samsung TV was turning itself on - although I now use a standby power-saver socket/remote which knocked the problem on the head.

You have a poltergeist with a penchant for 'Daybreak'.

Poor thing... you'd have thought it'd have suffered enough, without having to watch Daybreak...

Switch it off at the plugs. We do it to all our electricals when we go to bed, computers, TVs, etc. If you're not using it that often, the best option to stop it turning on is to unplug it.

Both my Toshiba TV's turn "on" at about 3am - they don't light up but go green, and make a humming noise. I put it down to it looking for updates. Its annoying though when I'm just getting off to sleep.

I dont know if this applies but when we got our first remote control teli in the 80's it turned on at a certain time of the day when the sun came beating in the window and shone on the red sensor .

I use a 6 way plug with switches and always turn off switch for TV at night.

What happened to the good old days when all TVs came with an off switch.

I thought TVs used infra-red rather than radio signals? If so then an infra-red signal wouldn't travel through walls, unless your neighbour is deliberately pointing their remote through your window.

This is what I was going to suggest. My TV sometimes "clicks" when it is on standby which I assumed is the EPG being updated.

I haven't a clue to be honest. It became s bit of a standing joke between us though and fid lead to some piss take clicking.

They do use IR, and you are quite correct they don't work through walls.

Normally the middle of the night though.

I must still be living in the good old days.
All my four TV's have an on/off switch
Samsung / Panasonic / LG / Toshiba

Have they all got mechanical mains switches? - or just a 'soft touch' push button which doesn't actually turn much off.

Mechanical switches are VERY rare.

Most will have an on/off switch, but it would be unusual to have a physical switch that actually disconnects the mains from the TV. They're not popular because it means standby mode won't work.

(My TV's remote is unreliable at turning it on; there's a faint blue LED that comes on (on some TVs, there's an LED that turns off!), which I can't see unless I put my glasses on. The screen stays black for a long time so you can't tell what's happening; then it stays blue for just as long!

I would love a big chunky switch on the front. As well as a big rotating pointer switch to instantly select between TV, EXT, HDMI1/2 etc. As it is, you can't find out what it's set to, or change anything, until it's 'warmed up' (even the old valve sets used to be a lot quicker!). Unsurprisingly, I don't watch TV much anymore!)

I now exactly what you mean - some sets are a nightmare, you can't tell if they are coming on, going off, or what

Luckily all my TV's at home do the sensible thing of a red LED in standby, which goes off when you turn the set on.

Don't mean to take the thread off topic, but what would cause it to "click" if it was in stand-by during the day or evening? Would schedule changes due to the over-run of tennis result in an EPG update, for example?

All the switches make a 'click' noise when used so I assume their mechanical.

By 'mechanical' I mean proper mechanical latching switches, not just a momentary contact switch.

My Samsung TV does not have an off switch, only goes into standby mode with a red light.
