The later Sony sets have a momentary contact on/off switch on the set - but all it does is turn off the red standby LED - you can still turn the set back on from the remote

Prior to those if you turned it 'off' (still ON, just a slightly lower standby) you couldn't bring it back on from the remote, but had to press the on/off on the TV.

There have been a few relatively recentish ones that also had a mains rocker switch as well, and these of course turned the mains off completely.

My Hitachi (Vestel) Plasma at home has a proper mains switch underneath, and various Vestel clone TV's have also often had mains switches, often (rather bizarrely) right round the back of the TV.

There was a TV I saw in sainsburys a few months back that had a rocker on/off switch at the back.

It was a cheaper brand, I've never been a fan of leaving things like TVs in standby.

I even power of my PC's rocker switch at the end of the day as it draws power when left on.

My Sharp Aquos, which is a few years old, has an on/off switch on the top. When it's off the remote does nothing. I don't like to leave it on standby or have to rely on the remote control to switch it off.
I think a lot of wall mounted TVs don't have off switches and only go into standby these days.

I got a toshiba 32"

it's left in standby, and a white Sqaure is visible. when it boots up that square is flashing then goes off when its booted.

I think it does update the EPG at night. because I have seen the square blink when I went to get a drink one night.

I do have a rocker switch though that disables the ruddy lot.

excellent picture though.

A lot of the Sharp Aquos sets don't switch off, while the switch on the top is a latching one it's only a tiny low voltage switch, and just puts the set in a standby condition, but without the ability to turn it on from the remote.

If you know the model number I'll check exactly for you.

Bizarrely enough, the silly little switches fail regularly, and is something we keep in stock.

Any ideas what's causing it?!”

Do you have anything connected to it via scart or HDMI cable?
DVD/Bluray player, VCR, Sky/satellite/Freeview/VM box?
